  How Many of you Remember Mr. Rogers Neighborhood?

  just saw the movie "a beautiful day in the neighborhood" with tom hanks as fred rogers.

  excellent acting and story-line.

  it brought back many fond memories as a child.

  Do You Think “Higher Education “Is All That??

  as jehovah’s witnesses, we were regularly told how awful a college education is.

  i’m no longer associated with the religion but i am not so pro university.

  it’s not because i think you are better off without a degree.

  I think the public speaking part was a big plus for JW's when we had the TMS. Now, that is being watered down compared to what is used to be.

  JW's simply are not taught to think and analyze issues, rather just learn some things and parrot them back to others. If you can't remember what to say, just tell people to go to JW dot Org to find the answer.

  Also, a major weakness that many JW's have is the ability to write. A few good courses in college in the Behavioral Sciences (Organization Behavior, Psychology, etc.) force you to learn to analyze, seek resources, research and then write in proper APA (American Psychological Association) style with properly inserted citations and references. This is typically the standard used for any type of informational or research paper.

  APA style is a pain at first with all of the rules for margin width, indentations, double spacing, capitalization, bullet points, citing single authors of a work, two authors, three to six authors, more than six authors, etc. Then, depending on type of work being cited (book, magazine, journal, blog, on-line), when to use proper case, italics, dates, page numbers, editions, etc. etc. etc. And then not writing in first person but in third person active voice. If you have had to write papers which conform to proper APA standards, you know what I mean.

  In the end, I still find myself using a lot of the APA stuff for business presentations and I guess it adds a few points to your credibility on what you are talking about when everything is properly structured.

  A "standard" JW learning to be a window washer while in high school simply does not learn this.

  Older JWs who go Overseas to Live

  i know of two older couples who have gone overseas to live in recent years.

  one could be classified in my opinion as a “need greater” although i think it might also have to do with getting more for their money.

  the other i think was seeking out a cheaper and more naturally beautiful environment to live in their retirement years.. what i wondered is if these people are disenchanted and bored with life in the states.

  CORRECTION:

  This may not be a big deal to most but after re-reading my earlier comments about the Caribbean, I mentioned the Bahamas.

  The Bahamas are not in the Caribbean. They are in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida.

  Not a big deal to most but I just wanted to make that clear.

  Older JWs who go Overseas to Live

  What about countries which have high crime rate?

  The DR (Dominican Republic) has a lot of crime, a lot. As does Trinidad and Tabago.

  Of course, Jamaica is extremely dangerous due to the drug trade. The same with St. Kitts and Nevis, considered one of the highest murder rates per capita in the Caribbean, and for that matter the world. Again, gangs and drugs. It's typically not directly aimed at the people in general like in Mexico but there is the danger of innocent people living there or tourists of getting caught in the middle.

  Puerto Rico has also become worse since the hurricane a couple of years ago. Not necessarily extreme violent crime, but unfortunately crime none the less.

  How old is old?

  having a conversation with a pimi elder and i asked him how he deals with the fact that he never expected to get old.

  i get the feeling that some dubs still have the original generation explanation hard-wired, even though they claim to accept the new version.

  so my question is, how old do you have to be to be considered old?

  Central America ? ...... I would move to Costa Rica in a heartbeat. There are a huge number of Americans living there now. Beautiful country, stable, great coffee, a great health care system that thousands of Americans use, at about 30 cents on the dollar compared to the US.

  The Caribbean is a bit dicier. A lot of the countries are divided between the haves and have-nots. A lot of crime in many places. Just very expensive in some of the better areas. I could go into detail on many of these countries but if I was moving to the Caribbean my first choice without doubt is part of the US, Puerto Rico. My wife and I have already thought about retiring there in the future.

  If I ventured further out beyond my comfort zone, the Dutch territories, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao would be my next choice. Curacao would be my first choice. They are far enough south that you don't have hurricanes but then you have to get used to the fact that you get very little rain ... not really tropical-looking like South Florida ... kind of barren in some ways.

  The Bahamas is also an option being so close to Miami (Bimini is only 45 miles from the US coast) if you don't mind driving on the "wrong" side of the road (the left side). If you have a boat, it's about an hour to an hour and a half ride depending on what type of boat you have.

  Overall, I really like Puerto Rico.

  I remember Mr Rogers when I was a kid. I watched it a lot since I found it so corny but I still liked it.

  When Eddie Murphy did the "Mr Robinson's Neighborhood" thing on Saturday Night Live, I found it to be hilarious. I still remember several of the of the shows and there are quite a few of his skits on you tube.

  One of the funniest was when his teaching "word of the day". He held up the word "ransom."

  He then put it into a sentence. He said "I ran-some dog out of my yard today."

  God, those things were funny. You really have to go to you tube and watch some of those skits.
