Nice work. You conducted the study. Hang in there, friend. I am very impressed at how you handled yourself!
To scholar:
I'm not sure where you got your degree. I only have an AA from Phoenix College. However, please be advised that "society/s" should be spelled "society's," "some thing" is actually spelled "something," "how is it" should be "How is it," there is no space before a question mark, there should be two spaces after a period, "When one become" should be "When one beomes," etc. If you're going to claim to have an MA then simple punctuation should not be a problem, unless what you're doing is satire, which I suspect.

Buying out the opportune time
by RunningMan inall of my life, i was told by the society that i should buy out the opportune time.
to them, this phrase meant that i should cut down on watching tv or some other worthless activity, and of course, spend that newfound time worshipping the great publishing company.
well, since i stopped going to meetings on april 10, 2002, i have discovered an entirely new and far more enjoyable application for the admonition to buy out the opportune time.

RunningMan plays in chess tournaments? Nice, so do I, in Arizona. I also loved your recount of the assembly this year.

The Apostle Paul
Dustin Huwe points out that in 1 Timothy 1:4 and Titus 3:9, Paul advises us to ignore "fables and endless genealogies." The genealogies of Gen 10, Chr 1-9, Mt 1, and Lk 3 are one of the key ways creatonists have 'proved' the Earth to be about 6,000 years old.
Secondly, in Titus 1:14, Paul tells us to ignore Jewish fables. Wouldn't that mean most of the Old Testament, if not all of Genesis?LOL

Well, I'm about to do it.....
by razorMind ininform my jw parents of my official stance on "the path they tried to teach us when we were young girls.
" <---(oft-used phrase to try to "guilt" us into coming back as jw's)
it'll be a first and a definite shocker coming from the likes of me...i usually avoid all religious discussion/confrontation on the few occasions i've visited them.

I applaud your decision and courage. I wrote such a letter and my two sisters now shun me although they didn't even try to prove me wrong on even one point. I said if they can show evidence about the UN scandal to the contrary of my statements that I would go to every meeting for a year. Their only response is I'm an apostate and end of story. My mother still loves me and won't shun me, though. Oh well, at least I did what I thought I had to do, speak the truth. I will never stop speaking the truth as I see it and have no regrets in living that way. Whatever happens, you will be true to yourself.

If you ever Wondered why it is so HARD to Sue WT for being DFed- read this
by JT inin re: your status in the xxxx congregation of jehovah's witnesses, xxxxxxxxx.
e. when a judicial committee handling a case of wrongdoing reaches the conclusion that the unrepentant person would be disfellowshipped, then the committee will speak with the person and let the individual know of their decision to disfellowship him or her from the congregation.
the supreme court in serbian eastern orthodox diocese specifically held that the first amendment prohibits civil court inquiry into matters of internal church discipline.

Good thread JT and intersting posts by all. I am only a paralegal in the US but my two cents from school and research.............the bottom line is the US Gov't will BEND OVER BACKWARDS to stay out of ANY religious issue, and I do mean ANY. The only exception would have to be a big time crime like pedophilia or of course tax evasion. For someone to sue the WT for being Df'd or Da'd, I believe, would be an impossible case to win. If anyone knows of such a case I would love to see it.
Maybe covering up pedophilia will cost them some millions. I haven't heard of the progress of the cases that are ongoing. Has anyone here heard anything?

For you ol' timers: How has the WT changed in your view?
by logansrun inhow have the publications changed over the years, in your opinion?
do you feel that they are more "politically correct" now than in the past?
what about writing style?

I was a witness from birth in 1956 until about 7 or 8 years ago. I rarely read a publication now, but I would definitely say they are dumbed down both by content and writing style. I would think they are trying to appeal to a generally less intelligent person nowadays, but that's giving the writers credit for having any intelligence themselves. The older publications seemed to be a no hold barred, call out the Devil and the world to a barroom fight, but now they seem like whimperings and trying to put people on guilt trips. I would say they are definitely more cult-like, although maybe I just see it now more for what it is, and the dishonesty is even greater now especially for what they don't say, like the UN scandal, etc.
But what do I know!
