to paraphrase "...maybe you might be saved..".
i can't find much reference to it and desire to read the whole scripture in context.. anyone know which one i'm talking about?.

my sister and i (about 13-14 at the time) had always laughed at the more consistent word whiskers in our hall.

have you noticed how many jehovah witnesses are in their second and third marriage?
why is it that a religion that says it's morally pure, has so many people in their second and third marriage?
of course they say that there are no divorces in the jehovah witnesses, but that doesn't seem true.

Along these lines, I remember something that I had forgotten regarding JWs and marriage.
Sometime in the 80s i was re-united with one of my best friends from Bethel. He lived in Texas and I was in California at the time. He drove out to see me and another buddy once, out of the blue. He said to both of us, "You've got to come back to Texas with me and help me sort something out with my wife." Well, we were really good friends for a long time. He and his wife had originally invited me to come to Texas from Bethel to perform their wedding ceremony. Bethel wouldn't give me the time off.
He and his wife were both very happy to have my friend and I there. We actually were able to only act as referees while they decided on the best way to divorce. He had a girlfriend. She was 10 years younger and a "sister" in the cong where he was an elder.
So, he says to me (in front of his other buddy who was also an elder in the same cong), "I have never had sex with that woman." No, my memory is not bad. He actually said it. He then asks me, "Do you believe me?" He was my friend! I said, "Of course. If you say you didn't do it, I believe you." He immediately turns to his other elder friend and says, "Do you believe that? He actually BELIEVES me!" He did this right in front of my friend (the other guy from California) and me.
I just took it. He goes on talking and says, "You know what? I think the Society should let us have a swap meet every 10 years or so and on a given day have someone just say, 'SWAP!' And let the brothers and sisters just grab a new husband or wife. That way they wouldn't have to go to the trouble of df-ing everyone."
This is an elder talking, to another elder. Well, he does leave his wife, marries the other girl, gets df'd and gets reinstated. He went on to do so many mean and small-minded things to my buddy that eventually both of us leave and have never tried to contact him again. Just don't even want to know about him. The whole time, he, his friend and friend's wife are preaching to my buddy and I about how we should get back "in the troof" and save ourselves from God's Wrath!
His buddy, the other elder, eventually gets busted for dealing drugs and does a few years in Huntsville (prison). I also was told by this same guy (the new bridegroom) that he had been using drugs since I knew him in Bethel. But, I'm slated for destruction.
The WT's claim to being Spirit-directed is a load. "By their fruits you shall know them."

i have spoken with a number of you already about my journey this winter, but i thought i'd share the story with all of you before i leave this thursday.
this fall i was asked by one of the professors at my school to go with her on a mission to guatemala.
her proposal sounded very interesting, but i didn't think i would be able to go because of my family's financial situation (my widowed mother has been paying my tuition and my brother's tuition while we both attend private institutions).

When I was in the US, we always wore levis to school. That was the way a "man" dressed west of the Appalachians. Went to school in Bangore, Maine once (and in Buffalo, NY as well as someother east coast cities). They made my folks buy slacks!
Well, in Bethel (1968 - 1972) came the ruling from Uncle Nathan that, henceforth, we were not to wear levis. Why? Because only homosexuals wore levis! Well I was shocked to learn of my true orientation! Big . I, and a lot of other guys from "out west" continued to wear them. Still do. A size larger, but, oh, forget it.
In Texas, levis and a dress jacket was high style for guys my age. Any comments?

Nathan Natas is correct. The Washington state ferries do run all year barring breakdowns. Even then, since commuters rely on them they bring another one online within a short time (maybe 2 hours or less). One thing, it is pretty cool crossing the Puget Sound in a snow storm. Another note: make sure you have chains and/or 4-wheel drive. Getting up the hill (or down) at Mukilteo can take over an hour in the snow (it is normally about 3 min.) And, (I feel a flame coming) Washintonians can't drive in the rain or in the snow (sweeping generality).
There are a lot of Reservations in the Seattle area. As things go, not overly interesting unless you are into casinos, tobacco or fireworks. But the scenery can be very nice. For example the Swinomish reservation and the Marysville reservation. Many, not all, of the long-time residents of Washington take a pretty dim view of Indian people.
I lived there some when I was a kid. One of my friends, a woman older than me at the time, made the mistake of saying something to one of her caucasian "friends" once about being of indigenous ancestry. The (other) woman was horrified. "But, I thought you were Mexican. So that's alright!" The old witch (spelled with a 'B'.)
When you get to the bridge that spans the slough (bayou) that separates the island (I think it is Fidalgo Island, not Lopez Island like I said yesterday) from the mainland look to the left and you will see the Casino. You have to cross the median (it is a 4-lane road but legal to cross). The tobacco shop is next door to the casino. If you don't see it, stop at any restaurant along the way or store and they will tell you how to get there.

i believe that almost any kind of legal employment is honorable depending on how we approach it.

I got the "never even finish high school or college thing too! As far as being intelligent, I thought I was but now have my doubts.
There are also witnesses who just plain BELIEVE. You can't question their intelligence any more than you could a devout Catholic (given their scandals) or pretty much any other religion.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
Thing is, for me, I didn't let them take away my faith. My faith is MY CHOICE and, although they almost got away with it, I was able to come full-circle and still believe WITHOUT THEM. I do put God first, I just don't need them to tell me how to do it. I actually learned a lot of things about the Bible and God through them but do not credit them with what I know. It has taken me all of my life up to this point to get rid of most of the bs that they taught.
As far a furthering my education, well, even in college that is up to the individual. I really do know some pretty stupid college grads...
Good on you for telling your brother to get educated. It is more necessary today than ever. My son wants to go to UNAM, in Mexico City to study law. I'm all for it. I will back him 100%. I might do it myself in a couple of years. My nehphew here is the dean of a local university and has offered me a tuition-free law degree. I think we'll need that in the future here in Mexico.
Side Note: My son told me yesterday that he would like to visit and maybe live in New Zealand someday. He has a good impression of it although probably idealized. I told him, "You'll have to learn English." Didn't scare him off though. I think he would probably make a pretty good Kiwi.
