  Sorry I am reading back through the posts to see if the theory has already been explained and it doesn't seem to have been. But..

  Conceptually speaking, the "I am who I am" is a trap that no one should be in. Why limit yourself? Why label yourself?

  "I am who I am" is maybe not a trap, limit or a label.

  Paedophiles do use the arguement for the acceptance for homosexuality as credence for their own sexual prediliction, which just shows how clever they can be. What you haven't responded to is the consensual difference between homosexuality and rape and murder. Is the acceptance of an omnisexual society (I believe this is the most fashionable term) the first step on the "slippery slope", inexctricably linked to increased rates of rape and murder?

  I doubt the nurture/nature debate will be settled on this forum no matter how hard you try to educate us, but I would like you to give us a brief synopsis of what Dr Peck's "dely of gratification" theory is. I don't have time to read his book at present but if it is as interesting as you say i may in the Summer.

  I delayed my sexual gratification until i was 30 and still chose a partner of the same sex but maybe I totally misunderstand the theory, but I am also assuming you mean delay and not 'dely'.

  p.s. if you use spell check I'll read a book on debating skills :-)

  judging by bush's recent comments and the recommendation that the un inspectors leave iraq, it looks like the war will be starting any day now.. i wonder if bush intentionally timed it so that things would be starting on st. patricks day the day that commemorates the saint who drove the snakes from ireland.

  are JW's classist?

  is it just coincidence or do jw's seem to prefer members to be of at least middle class standing.

  i cant think of one brother who had to struggle to make ends meet who became an elder or ms. in fact it seems like those ones were often viewed as weak.

  any thoughts?

  Mmmm...

  The elders in my congregation were mostly working class and are not affluent, but just as many cultures are hierarchical, so are the Witnesses and those with similar incomes do tend to stick together.

  Would you take your shoes off?

  if you went to someones house as a guest and they asked you to take your shoes off..would you?..would you be offended?....

  does anyone know if this is proper etiquette?.

  didn't know where else to post this........ my daughter was invited to a neighbors house and they requested people remove their shoes!...she never had anyone ask her that before.

  I confess this was a pet peeve of mine. I loathed sitting around with everyone exposing their corned and bunioned toes realeasing pungent aromas. Carpets are for walking on, not licking, and toddlers need a bit of dirt to built up immunity. And as to wearing soft shoes/slippers that other guests have worn AAGH, it's the pits. Of course I always took my shoes off if requested without a murmur.

  For some reason, I haven't come across this unpleasant ritual outside the Witnesses.

  In an ideal world we'd all be heeled by Manolo Blahnik, Ferragamo and Church's and shoes would be mandatory.

  upcoming elder visit, need help

  i have been inactive for quite a while since i started to do research on the society.

  the elders knew about this and even encouraged it, until i started to ask the wrong type of questions, mostly of the kind: "can you provide verifyable evidence for that?".

  anyway, they wanted to meet to discuss my current position towards the religion and towards the bible.

  Once again I agree with JT.

  Be vague, appear humble, in fact appearing depressed may make them tread lightly. Yes they may be like the Gestapo and ask intrusive questions that they have no right to but countering them in a similar vein or questioning their beliefs will backfire.

  You've said that you really don't want to DA/DF so this is your best option and then try not to meet them again. If it's 2 elders coming to see you it's not a judicial committee but if they get a whiff of apostate thought you may quickly be meeting with 3 and that you'll have to attend or be Dfed and if you do attend you will be interrogated and any room to be vague will be denied

  Lying may not be the most pleasant thing in the world but as has been pointed out to you the WTBTS has been dishonest with you. In 10 years time when all your relatives and friends have escaped you can call the elders then and tell them that the light has got brighter and yes you are an apostate.

  If you don't want a fight don't meet them armed. I was an elder and wouldn't have kicked a dying dog but may have risen to the challenge of a fight.

  "Sexist" Dress Code??

  a job centre employee has taken his employer to a tribunal because he claims that the dress code is sexist - women are not required to adhere to a similar standard.

  his union is backing him.. i am inclined to say "oh boo hoo, poor you, your employer has a dress code!

  Bit like life in the Borg really. The women got greater latitude than the men when it came to dress codes. It bugged the hell out of me that the men sat in starched shirt and tie while the women schlepped around in denim. I advocated that we should all either get to wear what we like or both sexes should wear suits.

  Now, I couldn't give a flying fig what people wear.

  been away for a while so it was quite the eye shock coming back in.. yes, we are finally getting our shepherding call this weekend.

  I wish you luck too, but suggest you think carefully about what JT says. The mindset of the Elders, no matter how laid back, is closed. I was a laid back Elder on an individual basis but if operating as part of the 'body' you end up drifting towards the rules. The Elders are appointed by the WTBTS and therefore have to operate by its rules. If you breath words that are remotely apostate, no matter how legitimate or heartfelt, they'll more than likely come down like the proverbial ton of bricks.

  Say you're researching, be vague, say you'll try and come to more meetings, then do what the Hell you like. If they see no change they may well give up if, as you say, they've not shepherded you much before.

  And be careful with the recording equipment. If it gets discovered it puts you in a really bad light.
