  Interesting. How about looking up the word "report" as in "field service report", or "congregation report"? Nah, I know that's not in the Bible at all...but I wonder how often it's in the publications?

  The only problem I see with this thread (forgive me for being punctillious) is that it takes all the literature the Society produced for over fifty years and compares it to the Bible: take virtually any word and it will be used more by the Society in this way because you are comparing a very large sum of literature to just one book. All the same, I think you made a good point

  Okay, I need to ask....was this a real article? There are parts of it that sound very Watchtower-esque, but a few things that are even kind of weird for the Writing Department to have published. Is this the article as it is written exactly, word for word? If it is....wow. Just astonishing.

  "Dead conscious of nothing at all" .....

  when speaking to a jw the other day, i didn't really have a good explanation of ecclesiastes 9:5, where it says that the dead are conscious of nothing at all.. what is everybody's take on it?

  Question on old earth creationism...

  is it just me, or are all old earth creationists (besides jws) also of the opinion that the noachian flood was local?

  my reason for saying this is that the jws pat themselves on the back for being old earthers (oh yeah, their not creaionists!

  lol) but then use patently young earth creationist flood models.

  As usual, your insights are right on the money. It's funny, about a year and a half ago, in the midst of my doubts, I talked to an elder in my hall who had graduated from Gilead a few years previously (him and his wife left their assignments for health reasons). When I mentioned some of my doubts about the science of the Watchtower the dinosaurs came up. We didn't talk long about them, but he emphatically did say (and another elder whom I talked to said similar) that all the dinosaurs died in the flood. I knew this was absolute bullsh!t. That was the next to last straw in my faith collapsing. If a recent Gilead graduate, what should be one of the most educated JWs on the planet, could spout such crap I knew that the entire superstructure of the organization's science was flawed to the core.

  The JWs insistance that they are far more scientific than young-earther's is very frustrating. Theirs is a strange mixture of young and old earth creationist arguments. Does anyone in the organization know this? Sometimes, I doubt it.

  reading the march 2003 okm brought up a question i've had for a long time....why do christians feel the the death of jesus was this unbelievably loving act by both god and christ?

  i mean, god knew his son would be faithful to death (because of prophecy...not much of a test on j.c.

  Thanks for clearing that up; I thought you were a "100% Bible believin' chap" but I guess I was wrong. I have a hard time thinking of God these days (if a gun was put to my head and I was told to tell the truth I would confess to being an atheist) but I do feel that some form of Deistic belief is far, very far, more respectable than the typical Christian fundamentalist dogma. I appreciate your candor and philisophical enquirey and look forward to many mind expanding dialogues ;)

  Francois,

  I agree with most everything in your post, though you confuse me. I assume you believe in the Bible and the Christian God from other posts I've read by you. How can you take the position you give when the Bible is pretty damn clear that Jesus came to earth to die horribly and pay a ransom in the form of his blood to his Father/God Jehovah for the sins of all humanity. (Okay, I don't have a Bible handy, but there are a multitude of scriptures that support this) How do you reconcile what the Bible says with your viewpoint? The entire thrust of the NT is on Jesus sacrifice. What don't I get or what aren't you saying?

  Another thing: I've heard it said by JWs and other Christians that the momentary pain Jesus suffered was itself a wrenching, painful nightmare for his father, Jah. Now, Jesus went through less than a day of suffering if we count from the moment he was betrayed in Gethsemane. If we take the notion that "a day is to God as a thousand years" (often used to explain why God is so slow in allowing suffering), well then one literal day is absolutely nothing to him -- a blink of an eye. Sorry, I just don't see how this suffering was so great on his part -- or his son's for that matter (who knew he would be ressurected).
