last meeting i ever went to was a memorial, 6 years ago.
i remember it well, and it wasn't even my own hall.
it was so boring.

i'm currently taking a course in cultural anthropology to fulfill a college requirement and thought i'd share something from one of the textbooks we are using.
in the book, "extraordinary groups -- an examination of unconventional lifestyles" ethnographer william w. zellner relates his findings when he spent some time studying the jehovah's witnesses.
he relates of an experience he had when attending a convention: .
Professor Zellner stated in his research:
When one of the elders was asked by an observer why a press center had been established, he said that the Society had taken positions against draft registration and the Equal Rights Amendment, and they wanted the public to understand that their views were based on Scripture
For the record, I believe he misunderstood the Society's position or made an error here. The Society does not take a stand against draft registration in the US, in fact, they encourage members to adhere to the law on this point.
I believe the author might have confused what the elder was saying. Perhaps, and this is just a guess, the elder mentioned that it was rumored the Society took a stand against these positions but that they wanted to clear the matter for the press.(Obviously it wasn't a "burning issue" since nobody from the press showed up)
Nevertheless, I thought Zellner did a good job in his portrayel of the JWs. There were a few minor errors here and there and some of his observations could have used some input from more refined sources, but all in all it is a good piece of work.

an observation...... recently someone asked "are we the most prolific exjw site on the net?
" from looking about and trawling around, i don't dispute that this site is the biggest, if not the most prolific.
(type in jw on a search and this site will appear) from an inactive point of view, i reckon despite the fact that there are some genuine people "hurting" here from past experiences, the majority of posts seem like some crusade against the wt and jws at whatever expense.
Scooby,
Do the JWs as a whole and as individuals not also engage in hateful speach? Do they not denigrate all other religions, all political movements, big business (in the days of Rutherford and beyond), many scientists, and anyone else who disagrees with their viewpoints in even the smallest matters? Do they use, as you call it, "emotive language" designed to instill absolute, unquestioning loyalty in it's adherants and a total disdain for the outside world? I agree with you that some here go overboard in their castigation of the Society, but you totally ignored the point I made -- the Society engages in the type of behavior you are describing all the time! Why, oh why, can't you see this?

Scooby,
the majority of posts seem like some crusade against the WT and JWs at whatever expense. Before you jump and taunt, understand what I mean. It seems to me that whatever the JWs do or say is wrong wrong wrong by this boards definition. I think Validity is lost here so many times by your constant slander.Actually, I agree. Read my posts in the thread about the new "Great Teacher" book and you will see the balancing voice I tried to be. Unfortunately, some ex-JWs exhibit the same narrow thinking and simplistic dichotomy that they had as a JW only in reverse. But that's the point Scooby!! The JWs do the exact same thing! It makes perfect sense that this organization would cause so much hatred in the people that are former members. Why? Because the Society has villified them as well as the rest of the world. The natural reaction -- but not necessarily the rational reaction -- is to lash out at everything the Society does as being wrong. So, instead of the Society always being so perfect and righteous like the WT claims, it becomes the Evil Empire TM which does everything wrong. The truth is somewhere in between -- but leaning to the Evil Empire side for sure.
It would not matter what the JWs did to "reform" if they even were to take some heres point of view, I reckon most here would still look for, or invent fault. For me, "reform" would entail a complete abandonment of the Bible as the infallible word of God. I don't think that will ever happen. Nonetheless, your thought here is pure hypothesis since the Society has NEVER reformed and has even clamped down harder and harder in it's viewpoints.
I think some here love being exJWs, they love exploiting their apparent loss and others who maybe have been genuinely hurt. You're probably correct. I don't like the never ending "weepy" threads that never get resolved. You shock me, though, by admitting that some might have "been genuinely hurt." Care to elaborate?
To watch this site sometime is painful, it isn't pleasant, infact sometimes it's a hateful place to see.So why are you here? You don't engage in any intellectual conversation of any kind nor are you lending a helping hand to those who have been hurt by the Society's stupid teachings. Leave if you want.
ExJw "brotherhood" seems not all its cracked up to be either..........Interesting the "either." You admit that the Society isn't "all it's cracked up to be" in their love? Great! One thing, though. Nowhere did I sign or pledge to be part of some "brotherhood" when I joined this board or when I left the JWs. This isn't a religion, it's a fucking message board! Get real. Bradley
this was emailed to me from a friend...
the old testament is a compilation of convenient myth and a history of racial justification and aggrandisement, threaded through with rules of hygiene and behaviour, all devised to convince the children of israel that as god's chosen race, no matter what calamities befell them as victims of babylon and egypt and no matter what calamities they wantonly inflicted on other races and religions, they should strive to increase in number, power and extent.
the new testament, as expressed in the four gospels, is a dispensation from the narrow and proscriptive uncharity of the jews, appealing to the greek and latin temperament.
Island Woman,
You're wrong.

this is my first post.. when i was still a witness myself, there were some perennial stories regarding 'famous' jehovahs witnesses or ex's.
does anyone know any truth or have any proof about the following: hank marvin, cliff richard and more importantly, the man who hit the gong in the 'rank' movies?.
if you have anyone of note you want to tell me about, i'd most appreciate it too.. cheers, rush.
A number of years ago, Fred Flinstone became a Witness and started pioneering. Here's proof:
watchtower opens way for furman street property development
the watchtower bible and tract society of new york, inc., a legal entity of jehovah's witnesses in the united states, has announced the possibility of selling its nearly one-million-square-foot building on the brooklyn waterfront at 360 furman street.
for some 20 years, this building has been the principal shipping facility for the bibles and bible-based publications produced by jehovah's witnesses at their world headquarters.
Funny thing is that the Society will sell their property to anyone who has the money, even if the purchasing organization is part of "Babylon the Great." In Chicago we had an assembly hall which was a historic converted theatre (kind of like a mini-Stanley theatre). It was sold in the mid/late '80s to another religious group -- the Nation of Islam, I believe.

from another thread:where else does the media so vividly show females as equal .
when i read this, i had to wonder: is there something wrong with doing so?
portraying women as equals?
Teejay,
I concur. And an average looking woman is far sexier than a sexy looking man.

Asleif,
Nice research on the author! I didn't know he was an atheist, his accounts generally are very neutral in the book. By the way, the other groups mentioned in the book for my class are: the Old Order Amish, the Gypsies (amazing read, really), the Mormons, Christian Scientists, etc. We won't be discussing the JWs in class, though (unfortunately).
