Confessing Sins to Elders for forgiveness, Can Elders Forgive Sins?
by SanLuisObispoTruthSeeker inif i have a addiction to cocaine, gay-porn and rock-and-roll, where does the bible indicate i need to confess my sins to the elders instead of confessing my sins here and have members pray for me?
whose brain-child was this idea?
i would rather confess my sins to you because the elders are not known for keeping their mouths shut.

Do elders apply John 20:23 to themselves? I think Catholic and Lutheran priests do.

How I recently handled JWs at my door
by Christian guy inthe jws stopped by my house a couple weeks ago on a saturday morning.
i knew that with others most likely waiting for them out in the car they probably did not then have much time to engage in any serious conversation.
so i let them talk while i feigned interest in what they had to say.

Good work Christian guy! JWs hear the phrase 'good news' so often, getting them to question the way they use it is pretty smart.
The pearls before swine comment was a bit harsh though, you'll probably regret that one soon.

What Would a Country Run by Evangelical Christianity Look Like?
by cofty inon an earlier thread i made the statement that, "an evangelical christian government would look a lot like the taliban".. laika asked me incredulously, "do you really think your friends from your old church would govern like the taliban!?".
i thought it was a really interesting question and might work as a separate thread.. the people i worshipped with were mostly a nice bunch of people, but the thought of them having secular power would make me shudder.. christianity is mostly harmless because it lacks power.
christian politicians are restrained by secular laws and constitutions.

Yeah I got that originally but when you asked me the question in your post 8894 you just wrote 'christian' so I got a little confused.

Sure Cofty, though it would depend on the Christians, some British churches are quite excited to be offering gay marriage. Christians are a diverse bunch.
Edit: Also, I know that you know that comparing the evangelicals to the taliban is hyperbole because you said they were mostly a nice bunch which is never how you would describe the taliban. I bet if you went back to your old Church you would never say anything like that to your friends. I'm convinced that you are actually quite pleasant in real life.

Yeah it would be a backwards step for gay rights, but I think any gay person would prefer to live under evangelicals rather than the taliban. I can't imagine any British evangelicals advocating the death penalty for gay people, I don't think I know any who would support making gay sex illegal even, but admittedly I don't know many.
I really can't see evangelicals shooting Malala for wanting an education either.

A Manual for Creating Atheists by Peter Boghossian
by cofty ina manual for creating atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith--but for talking them out of it.
peter boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than twenty years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality, cast doubt on their religious beliefs, mistrust their faith, abandon superstition and irrationality, and ultimately embrace reason.
- amazon.... "boghossian has provided an indispensible chart book for all of us who must navigate the rising sea of magical thinking that is inundating america today.

Hmmm... Looking forward to it then cofty, though if you think your average evangelical is akin to the taliban I'm honestly not sure why you were so perturbed by my satirical post on all religious people being idiots or moral monsters...

Cofty, you are taking me far more seriously than I am taking myself right now, perhaps I should have added some emoticons?
Actually, I agree with most of Q's last post, though I might swap out 'faith' for 'belief' (Greg boyd's Benefit of the doubt is a good book on this subject, in my possibly irrational opinion) Of course all ExJWs should know that when someone thinks their beliefs are necessary for salvation, be it from God or a political system etc... this is rarely healthy because it means such beliefs cannot be challenged, but I don't think you can categorise people, we don't just need laws to restrain religious leaders, we need laws to restrain all our leaders.
Edit: And you used to be an evangelical christian right? Do you really think your friends from your old church would govern like the taliban!?

I'm reasonably confident that I don't need to look up Lysenko to understand that Stalin was generally irrational, but thanks for your concern.

If someone has typed it all out manually they've done well to only make one error, or maybe there's more?
Still funny though, in Numbers of all books!
