What Would a Country Run by Evangelical Christianity Look Like?

On an earlier thread I made the statement that, "An evangelical christian government would look a lot like the Taliban".

Laika asked me incredulously, "Do you really think your friends from your old church would govern like the taliban!?"

I thought it was a really interesting question and might work as a separate thread.

The people I worshipped with were mostly a nice bunch of people, but the thought of them having secular power would make me shudder.

Christianity is mostly harmless because it lacks power. Christian politicians are restrained by secular laws and constitutions. If that was not the case what would that look like?

I don't imagine for a minute that they would go back to OT ethics so let's keep it sensible, but I am sure a society run by evangelical christianity would become increasingly oppressive.

For starters, gay people would lose the rights they have won in recent years. The motto of christians without power is, "hate the sin but love the sinner". If evangelical christians had control of the legislature I am certain that there would soon be anti-homosexual discrimination.

Legal partnerships would no longer be recognised. Adoption by gay couples would be banned. Employment discrimination would be permitted. Guest House owners would be permitted to turn away gay couples. It would only be a matter of time before the question of banning gay sex would be at least be up for discussion.

What other changes do you think an unfettered christian government would implement?

The Mormon one was tried in Utah. Result polyandry, polygamy ( young wives demaneed by old men , former husbands exiled), blood sacrifice ( death for those who were deemed too wicked to repent and be covered by Christ's atonement),Business monopoly, financial theft , fraud ( Kirtland Bank) , military posturing ( Mormon battalion plus prophecy of violent conquest of Missouri ), hatred of Gentiles ( Utah had oath to avenge death of JSmith against US for a long time), murder of others ( Mountain Meadows Massacre), repression of women, mandate on clothing, exclusion of non- believers, racism , religious taxation, education as religious tool,anti science ( where in conflict with dogma), prohibition of alcohol not owned by religious leaders, nepotism in government and business, vigilante militia ( Danities) , death penalty, censorship of the media , religious ownership of media, zero drug policy ( except to induce religious vision ! Ref LDS visionary stories, sacrament wine and JS usage of local plants) , mistrust of medical procedures, gay abuse ( modern day electro shock therapy), sexual control ( sex only for procreation through hole in sheet) and so on. Bloody madness.

I think you said a few days ago that you are opposed to abortion under all circumstances including rape and ectopic pregnancy.

Thank you for illustrating why christianity must never have secular power.

Yeah it would be a backwards step for gay rights, but I think any gay person would prefer to live under evangelicals rather than the taliban. I can't imagine any British evangelicals advocating the death penalty for gay people, I don't think I know any who would support making gay sex illegal even, but admittedly I don't know many.

I really can't see evangelicals shooting Malala for wanting an education either.

Laika - So are you saying that a chrsitian government would oppress homosexuals but not as bad as the Taliban?

I also think a christian government would parents back the legal protection to beat their children.
