we have shown an abhorrence to pedophiles, and rightfully so, but how would you view pedophilia if your own son or daughter was either a known pedophile or displayed abnormal feelings for children?
I think the term "unconditional love" is one of those overused terms that everyone says to try and pretend that people don't get angry, disappoint others, and just generally screw up. The love a parent feels for their child is not based on the child's actions (at least mine is not) because since people are imperfect, love could not continue to exist based on that. My answer to this interesting question is simple, my love for my son dies when I do. Just because I think something he did was heinous would not stop the fact that I love him. I would hate his act, I would hate the pain that he caused, but I would love HIM. I would not shield him from responsibility for his actions, that's what's wrong with a lot of people today. I think people are confusing love with agreement or approval. Just because you love someone doesn't mean you approve of their actions, or agree with their actions.
was it family, friends, the belief that this all was really true?
At first I thought it was the truth, then because of my family. The only reason I am not a flame throwing apostate now is because my family is still totally, and we have a great relationship.

Wow, with that kind of thought process it's a wonder you ever did leave! However, one of the things religions usually teaches that I agree with is that it helps you to help someone else. So, if you have too much free time, and not enough to do, volunteer. Since you don't seem to feel very highly about other adults, why don't you do some volunteer work for children? Become a mentor, or work at a YMCA, a Boys and Girls Club, something that will bring you in contact with the joy, innocence and beauty of youth. No matter how bad my day is (and trust me, it gets VERY BAD sometimes) all I need is a smile from my son, and my spirits are lifted. Find a young person who needs attention, and give it to them. Believe me, it will make you feel better about yourself, and show you the real purpose in life.
in the truth, happiness is equated with a stable family life, a hope for the future and working for the cause.. i still believe the same, just may be the cause isnt the same any more.
One of my "new years resolutions" is no more bitterness. I won't be bitter at my crappy job because it pays the bills. I won't be bitter at that crappy religion, because it seems to make the rest of my family happy. I won't be bitter at my crappy husband who won't help with the housework, because ........... uh ................because. So, I will find some happiness in working to be the best person I can be, and getting people to treat my the way I want to be treated. My main happiness, joy, and reason for living continues to be my wonderful two year old son.

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this, I was alternately drooling and panting. I have watched the Matrix so many times, I think I'm in it. I will be one of those idiots standing out overnight for tickets, and taking the day off work to see this movie. My only sad thought is I wish Aaliyah's part could have been salvaged.

i am well aware that money in itself does not bring happiness.. what i detect though amongst the witnesses is almost an antipathy to money and wealth.

Somene once said "Money can't buy happines, but it can sure rent it for a while!" I think it's funny that people try to lay blame at the door of an inanimate object. The truth is, you will be happy if you are determined to be happy, no matter how much money you have. You may be more comfortable with money, but you won't necessarily be happy. We were poor and on welfare when I was growing up, but we were very happy because we had each other.

I don't know if you are still checking replies, but let me add my heartfelt thoughts to you and your son. My son is two, and I have often said if someone hurts him they better hope the police find them before I do. I would kill and do jail time to protect him. I believe, however, that he is better off without such a bitter, uncaring, and STUPID person in his life, one who turns his back on his "family" because some group of men in New York tell him to. Maybe in time your son will come to realize what love really is, and what it is not, and be grateful for the love you surrounded him with.
