A religion allows them to carry on their work tax free.
Publishers are in a sense "pimping" for the Watchtower. They stand on street corners hawking their wares of publications and the Watchtower gets all the monetary benefit from their effort by way of contributions.

The Watchtower organization is an extremely wealthy organization.
Because of this it has garnered respect from other corporations and organizations around the world. it is courted by banks, both here and internationally, as well as other secular and religious entities to join them in some way or another. If you have as much money as the Watchtower in the banks of the world, you are invited to be on their Boards, when you are on their Boards you are invited to their parties, to join their crusades.
This organization does not exist in a vacuum and has far reaching tenacles.
We will probably never know the real extent of their involvement with other governments and religions.

This book was published in 1967 and it is interesting that back then White notes:

Several years ago there was a wanted criminal in our congregation. Of course, no one knew it then but we later found out that he had specifically chosen the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses to hide out in because they were a low profile, almost underground organization.
He lived in a room with a witness family, had a Bible Study, became a witness in a very short time, married a sister and seemed a model brother until six months later he was arrested at the book study.

Actually, JW's have some of the most dysfunctional families in the world. This is because if a member of the family decides that they no longer wish to be a witness, that family member is ostrasized, shunned and considered an outcaset by other family members. It's absolutely disgusting how some families will completely stop speaking to their own precious flesh and blood in the name of a "loving" religion. It is religious blackmail orchestrated by those in charge, to get the family member to come back into the organization.

here i sit, in my public library, typing away a computer from a hot nasty seat.. but i wouldn't be anywhere else in the world right now.
(okay, maybe a couple of other places).
i have to be at work in 40 minutes, and its a 15 minute drive from here, so lets not expect a novel of a post.. yesterday was my birthday, and they did a little cake thing for me and all that which was nice, but otherwise, nothing is new.. my mother seems to be cooling off, but lets just say that the "excrement flinging fan" hasn't been turned off yet.. i'm 18 now, and nothing is different.
Richie, remember to always show your parents the love and respect that they deserve. Let them know that even though you are no longer a Witness that you are still an intelligent person and that you don't intend to throw your life away in debauchery. They may be misguided but they are doing what they are doing because they love you and want to protect you.
As time goes on and they get used to the idea and see that you are doing well things will get better and they will accept your decision. They will see that it came from a great young man. Let them be the ones acting out; don't follow their lead. You should always present a happy, contented face, showing them that you are at peace with your decision. They'll come around!

i base this on personal experience on a couple of fronts.
1. i have yet to come across a single verifiable of a cover up.
Your site was one of the first I visited when I got the internet at home. The pictures of you, in what I can only describe as an "unkempt condition", nearly DROVE me away from using the internet. There you were looking EXACTLY as an apostate was supposed to look. I wonder how many YOU DROVE back to the meetings with those photos?
Really, Beep? Well I had a different reaction. Danny's sight was also one of the first I visited and I saw an impassioned man who had been hurt by his religion and betrayed by what he thought was the truth. Of course, I don't know how apostate are supposed to look, but his appearance looked all right to me. We live in a casually dressed society and that is one reasons why witnesses and mormons stand out. They are both always in their suits.
I am an elder in my congregation and am contantly warned about the evils of the internet, but seeing Danny spurred me on to read more and to find out what his beef was all about. Now that I understand I can say that I sympathize with him and totally agree with him that the Watchtower society lies and will do anything in its power just to maintain its statua quo.
I am in awe of your amazing ability to ignore the shortcomings in your own religion. Bo blood, 1975, pedophilia cover ups...... However, in another sense I envy you. It must be nice to stick your fingers in your ears, to sing la-la-la-la, and to just pretend that everything is okay. It will save you a lot of stress. You are a true witness, a credit to the organization and I see Governing Body in your future.
