What are Americans taught about U.S and what do you really believe?
by sleepy injust wondering what exactly americans (u.s.a) are taught about their country in school .do you really salute a flag, do you swear allegiance to the country.
are you taught that you fought for freedom, and that america is the land of the free, etc etc?
do you actually believe what you are taught?

I remember way back in the 70's when I was in school and the whole school recited the Pledge of Allegiance (before and after me being a JW) that most people said the words but didn't really pay that much attention to it. They just wanted to get it over with to get back to passing notes and talking about the last football game. lol You just don't really think about it that much.
People here in the US just don't go around with their hand over their hearts all the time thinking about what a wonderful country we have. lol I think that people do get defensive when they preceive others as trashing us though. I guess some feel that a boundry is being crossed like when when someone says that your kid is ugly or something or that your favorite football team has no talent. It pisses people off.
I think E-man's comment about a lot of this political bickering being largly cultural is a valid point. If you lived here, you would understand people's reactions. On the other hand, if we lived in the UK, for example, we would probably not understand the silly Americans' reactions. make sense? That's the way I see it anyhow.

My son and another cult
by edge3 insadly i feel like my son is moving toward another paranoid cult like group.
after extracting him, his mom and myself from the jw's 12 years ago my son is now exposed to and possibly buying into another bazzare belief system.
after our divorce, his mother remarried to a guy who believes all sorts of conspiracy theories such as : .

Edge,
One place where you'll probably find the information that you're looking for is at rickross.com They list and have information on hundreds of cults. There's also a message board there where you can post your questions as well.
Good luck,
Rita

Welcome LadyExWay!
Good to see you here. I've read some about the group you were associated with at the Rick Ross site. Wow! There are some similarities between the Way group and the JW's (the two are cults). I hope that you will find your time spent here enlightening and rewarding.
Hugs,

JWs--cult or am i just bitter?
by sinamongurl inafter reading many experiences and comments on the board, i have begun to have questions.
questions that i really didnt know i until i read them.
as a recently df'd person, i am still struggling with whether jws are really a cult or is it just that im bitter for being torn away from the only thing that i knew, where i had friends that i thought loved me.

I'm so sorry that you're have a hard time right now. Things will get better; I promise.
Yes, the JW's are a cult. As for being bitter, I think it's normal to be bitter after all the crap they put us through. Most people are bitter after experiencing abuse. The key is to work through all of that, and that takes time and a lot of sorting out.
Talking about your experiences relieves the bitterness and anger. You're in the right place.
Hugs,
Rita

Do Dubs do Jury Service in your area?
by ozziepost inover on the weekend poll thread, something interesting (to me!!!
) has come up, the matter of dubs serving on juries.
check out the comments of blondie, mulan and myself on this thread: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/71933/1.ashx.

I served on a jury while being a JW when I was 22. I was told that it was a conscience matter. I decided to do it. No one gave my any problems over it. Fortunately, I was in a liberal congregation at the time, and the elders weren't so rigid. The congreagtion that I had been in a couple of years earlier would have tried to make the decision for me, and I would have been in trouble if I had served.
Maybe it depends on the personality of the elders/cong. as to whether or not it's acceptable.

I'm just finishing up therapy after a few years of it. It changed my whole life for the good. It saved my life, actually. I used to hate the Witnesses for what they did to my me and my family. Now, i can honestly say that i don't hate them any more; i feel sorry for them. I have no more guilt or shame, and I know who I am. I cannot say enough good about therapy.

This is one of the best posts I've read in a long time! Big Congrats!
So how did you become interested in the religion in the first place? You just don't seem the type.
