Thanks Jnat. I am bad at puzzles. I get impatient and try to force the pieces to fit.

Have you put on the "New Personality" ?
by Phizzy inwhen we were in we were often read that scripture and told we should work hard at putting on the new personality, which in wt speak meant their cult personality, nothing like the person of christ.. since leaving it has become necessary for us to make deep internal changes, to our worldview, to our emotions, and to our actions.. we have had to change from being controlled in all these areas by the wt cult, to forming our own new personality.. for born-ins like me this is really quite a task, we do not have a "pre-cult" personality to "recover".
but even for converts, there is stilll this work to do, before you joined you may have been racist, homophobic, or perhaps a thief, or immoral in some other way, surely you do not wish to "recover" those aspects of your original personality ?so you too have to "put on" a new one.. how are we all doing with this ?
i know that for me i feel it is still a work in progress, i need to work on certain things that are the result of my being in the jw/wt scam for all those decades, and some things that are a part of my natural personality which are not desireable as traits, laziness for example, and i am the arch-procrastinator, not good.. how do you guys feel you are doing since leaving ?.

Lisa Rose- I was born in. I agree with you that it is hard to seperate the JW teaching and our natural traits. I too have struggled with low self esteem and extreme self doubt.
Jgnat....I was in the same boat... except It was child abuse instead of spousal. I am 50 now and am still working on finding the pieces.

There's a little Houdini in all of us
by freeflyingfaerie inas i responded to an earlier post it occured to me that those of us who have been in the religion for any length of time are like harry houdini, the illusionist.. we willingly (for those that chose to really believe the lies) bound ourselves in chains.. we always had the opportunity to releaase ourselves...it was all an illusion...an illusion that we played along with.
but the option to end the mental confinement was always within our power.. going door to door we must have looked like a freak show to others.
we put ourselves in a glass cage in chains, as a "spectacle",...in which we were unwittingly frauds, because the whole time we could have gotton free.. that's all for now... .

Most born ins did not choose to be raised as a jw. We were spoon fed fantasies and pipe dreams and wrapped in a chain of lies. We were put in the glass cage of guilt not realising we were trapped. Freedom was the illusion. Those who stayed in the middle never realised they were captive. Those who strayed to the edges were the ones that discovered the glass wall.

I know I spe second guyt? Uessing myself. I was scared to death of doing something"that would make Jehovah sad" or bringing "reproach" on God"s organization or his name. I am trying to retrain myself to follow my instincts and not look over my shoulder.

This is something I have been thinking about lately. I disagree that born ins do not have a precult personality.
I think everyone is born with natural tendencies and traits. Many of us had them beaten or guilted out of us.
We were taught our natural selves were unworthy. They told us up front how we were expected to change. We helped with our own brain washing.
Now I am trying to discover who I really am.

FFF: I like the way you illustrated your point. It has made me think. You are so right...it is an illusion.
I lived under the illusion I had freedom....freedom from fear (no hell). Freedom from a heavy load (not a lot of unscriptual regulations.)
Free will.
The chains were invisible. I could not understand why I had such a hard time breaking away.
I think you have to see the chains first before you can even think about using the key.
This site has really made me rethink everything I thought I knew. I never realized how much fear I was really chained up in.
