I'm glad people don't agree on thing. All people, me included, are basically idiots, and it's only by being divergent that we've evolved over the years. Who'd want to live in a monochrome world.

DaVinci code is a fictional book by a writer of fiction. The author never meant it otherwise, and has said so. The Bavarian Illuminati do not exist. It would be difficult for any other group calling themselves that to have any real lineage to the original order. But it's big time fodder for conspiracy theorists. The funny part is that these conspiracy theories have been ongoing for centuries. (America's first major Third Party was the AntiMasonic party.) People seem to want to believe that there is some underlying purpose to the world, weather it's good or bad. Chaos is hard to accept on its own terms, I guess. So you can believe Jesus' descendants were the Cathars, that the Templars hid the holy grail, and that the Illuminati put wierd symbols on Proctor and Gamble cans if you want to. There's one born every minute.
I can say, as someone who researched a lot of "esoteric" groups, and as a former Frater of one, that the early Watch Tower group did use Rosicrucian symbollogy, without question, but they were not alone in that fact. There was a literal explosion of esoteric and "secret societies" at that time. It included working class groups like the Moose Lodge, on up to quasi-Masonic organizations like Rite of Memphis-Misraim, and on further to mystic-religious groups like the Rosicrucians, Golden Dawn, and the Martinists. We think of them as mysterious moreso now because they mostly no longer exist, or are at best shells of their former selves (Free and Accepted Masons), or are changed into a New Age profiteering house (AMORC). The fact is that Pennsylvania was a focal point for a lot of Rosicrucian Activity, with at least two large R+C fraternities operating from that state. Russell was a wealthy man, and he read a lot. He would have known about such groups, and possibly he even got ahold of some of their documents. Maybe we'll find out years from now that Russell knew Clymer, but even that doesn't matter.
Russell tried to present his own mystical theories and interpret the bible, and he was not above using symbollogy. He wasn't going to use Catholic or Othodox Iconography, and he needed something, since he was, after all, inventing a new religion. Using Rosicucrian and Masonic symbols would have been an easy thing to do. As to whether he ever received a R+C or Masonic degrees, that would never be revealed by his Fraters and Sorors, if he had any, and he would certainly have never have revealed that himself. Even if he did not, it's quite possible that one of the early members of the Bible Students in Pennsylvania did.

Billboards are one of the cheapest forms of advertisement in terms of viewers/$
For instance in a crowded metropolitan area like Atlanta, Billboards go at a 3 month lease for $4000 (or somewhat less for a rotating billboard). The number of viewers a billboard sees in an area like that will literally be in the millions over a three month period. The main thing is that the billboard has to be easilly viewable, eye attracting, and have a quick-to-remember website. Billboards that you would have to slow down and peer at to read have no effect.
www.lamar.com owns a lot of billboards. Clear Channel is another big one.
The ultimate, of course, would be to somehow get access to place a poster in one of the venues themselves. The rank and file would have to wonder HOW Jehovah could let that happen.

Picketting, I don't know if it was effectual or not. But there are other options. For example in large cities, billboards could be leased relatively cheaply on motorways and highways on the path to the convention site. A few simple slogans and questions with referrals (specifically the ones cyber-sista said and maybe BLOOD FRACTIONS: WHAT JW's DONT TELL YOU WWW.AJWRB.ORG could really stir up talk among the late night hotel groups, and even if it did not, then it would at least open a few eyes. The society might keep most JW's off of "apostate" sites, but they can't keep their eyes off the road.
