Will science ever replace religion?

first, there've been some really good threads here lately...i've been somewhat pre-occupied with a rather laborious personal project, so i haven't been able to engage myself in your conversations as much as i'd otherwise like; but i like to watch .

but, to the point: recently, scott atran (anthropologist, author of in gods we trust, and now working with the national center for scientific research in paris, and at the university of michigan) gave an interview in discover magazine.

the topic was "the surprises of suicide terrorism," but the concluding question (and answer) was what struck me most:.

jehovah's witnesses certainly have some unique beliefs and some are very, very confusing.

3rd most confusing:

Why Jesus was an also-ran to Paul when it came to quoting scripture in the kingdumb hall.

2nd Most Confusing:

Jehoova lets people into into the Book of Life based on their "heart condition". In theory this means an ignorant, illiterate farmer is a shoe-in for New Order, long as he's a nice guy. Or a baby.

BUT: you better fully understand the JW's theology, answer the baptismal questions correctly, get dunked, participate in all meetigns, study, and train others to make it through Armageddon.

1st most confusing:

God is Love. God Hates Wickedness. How can something composed entirely of love experience hate? Will the real Jehovah please stand up?

I was in a vfd for awhile when I was a JW. I never got any flack. I'm suppose there may have been the usual old hardliners saying "he could be using that extra time in the field ministry" but they never said anything to me personally.

which one teaching really hurt you when you found out that it was not true?

my number one thing is finding out that the name "jehovah" was not in the bible like it was in the new world translation (tm).

christians did not call god "jehover" "jehovah" or by his first name, no more than you would call your father by his first name when you were a child.

as a jw, we were taught that almost any conversation could/should be twisted adapted into a witnessing situation.

we were continually urged to watch for "witnessing opportunities".. someone says, "i wonder if we'll ever get out of iraq", and you were supposed to say "that situation shows man's inability to rule.

do you think god will act to rescue mankind and assure good rulership?".

I hated informal witnessing. Tried it once or twice. I mean, how did you know when to stop and start the clock? And no placements or coffee break.. I stuck to knocking on apartmentand trailer doors, thanks very much

Religions tend to self perpetuate, and in that regard they exist more or less because they've existed for a hell of a long time already. They are incredibly endurable social structures. So the entire arguement that religions exist to fill a need does not take into account the fact that religions (and I am thinking more or less of theistic religiosn, but it can apply to nontheistic religions such as Buddhism and Jainism as well) have training going back thousands of years in some cases just for their own survival as independant entities. They have evolved into efficient organisms, and whether they are needed or not, religions are very good at making laity believe they are needed.

Science has a certain self interest in perpetuating itself through education, and adherance to principles of good science, but the comparisons of it to religion really end at that point. Science won't go away, because one cannot uninvent an idea. Religion will not die out for largely the same reason. Science will probably chance over time, as methods are refined. Religion will change, as it always has, to keep up with current conditions. There aren't too many head-hunting cannibal cargo cults thriving on earth right now, and I think it's fair to say that as the world population's hierarchy of needs are met, the old theistic religions will be going the way of their predecessor's into the pages of history books. It may not come across as particuarly religious to a worshipper of today (A Southern-Baptist would probably find a typical Zen Buddhist sangha to be pretty nonreligious to their eyes, now), but that is just a matter of perception. It doesn't spell the end of religion at all.
