Watchtower = Pharisees
by drwtsn32 inthe wts always talks about how wrong it was for the pharisees to make an endless number of rules.
but the wts is guilty of the same thing.
you can't have a beard... you can't watch rated r movies... you must report your field service activity... you cannot go to costume parties... you can have some blood fractions but not whole blood... you can't read any stuff that is against our opinion... yadda yadda yadda.. my mom (an active jw) argues that theses are not rules but only guidelines.

Need Reference
by chappy inhi folks, been quite a while since i've posted on the board but visit regularly.
i need a reference/link on john 1:1. i've been told that the addition of "a" (word was "a" god) is incorrect in it's context from a greek lanquage point of view.
i need some kind of reference(s) explaining how this is a gramatical error.. later,.

Why On Earth Did You Ever Become A Witness & What Made You Decide To Leave?
by minimus ini've known for years that if i was visited at my home by jehovah's witnesses, i would have become a do not call.
i would have firmly but politely told the witnesses to never come back to my door and bother me again.
since i was raised "in the truth", i learned the religion from infancy.

hi minimus --
like you i was raised in it.
when i left many years ago it was a culmination of doctrinal questions plus personal issues with various "rules and regulations", and my feeling that i could never live up to what was expected.
it was only in the last year, reading many books, that i became convinced that wts is false prophet. probably the most influential book i read was david reed's, "answering jws subject by subject". this goes into each doctrine one by one, plus many aspects of jw history are dissected exposing the shaky foundations of this organization.
hope you are doing well.

How much do you tip and why?
by els ini am a waitress at a pizzeria/italian restaurant.
overall i get really good tips but sometimes it seems like the customers are going to tip a certain amount no matter what i do.
i can totally screw up a table and still get a great tip and other tables i give perfect service to and get a lousy tip.

i have always been a good tipper. i almost never leave less than 20% and if service has been acceptable i round that up to the nearest $5 or $l0. if service has been good i leave more. things have to be pretty bad for me to leave only l5%.
i also waited tables a few years back and know how hard the work is. the general public has no clue how demanding the job is, and how little base salary is (usually l/2 minimum wage - and you are expected to make that up in tips - imagine how discouraging when you don't). also, so many things are out of the control of the waitperson and depend on what is happening in the kitchen with the other servicepeople and cook(s).
my baptism of fire came when i was a new inexperienced waitress one sunday morning when several tables were pushed together to accommodate a group of about 30 from the local church. everyone wanted separate checks and about half had special requests (no sauce, more sauce, light toast, broken eggs, etc. etc.) i almost had a nervous breakdown.

Another Df'ing/suicide...in memory of a dear friend...
by Ghost of Esmeralda inthings have calmed down again with my mother to the point where i found myself once again in her kitchen last night.
drinking too many cups of coffee as i always do at her house, i imagine if i were a smoker i'd have been lighting one cigarette after another instead.
it had been a pleasant enough evening, i sat there with my crocheting in my lap, something i always take with me to my mother's house so that if i get nervous or stressed out, my hands, and my mind, have something to do and somewhere to go.

this is a truly heartbreaking story. and much moreso because it is not isolated. so many, so many have suffered this hopelessness at being shunned and rejected by all whom once were held dear.
remembering how discouraged you were a few weeks ago, essie, i am just gratified that you were able to come to the forum and share your feelings. time and experience, indeed, give the conviction that "this too shall pass."
i'm glad you're still here, and i thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings so eloquently.

WT Power is not good.
by Pepper ini used to really belive that jehovah was directinng the writeings of the wt, but now i see he does not.
they are just like all the rest, their in it for control of the masses and by that control they have influnce, influnce builds numbers numbers builds power; and power corrupts, and too much power like they have corrupts absolutly".
even now i feel their leanings of control even if i don't want it; its a fantasy world that is hard to break free from, because they dump guilt on by useing the scripture for their own means so thick and heavey it could for some people put them over the edge.

Did you know anyone who commited suicide in the org?
by JH inback in 1991, a young brother maybe 18 years old living next to my place committed suicide.
his father expected him to be very zealous just like he was, but the son never wanted to be like that.
he was always controlled by his father.

"for you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. and by him we cry, "Abba, Father." -- rom. 8:15
in the last year or so i have been able to draw closer to my Eternal Father, and i often think of the above words that desribe this intimate relationship. when as jws were we ever able to address our Father as "Abba" which is akin to Daddy or Papa?
