There's been a long-standing exception that one can associate with DF'ed family for necessary family business; e.g. for my father, that generally meant co-ordinating care of my grandparents with his DF'ed brother. I would guess that's what the speaker was referring to--or at least how he would justify it.

Why are they still going door to door?
by Euphemism inhey all, long time no see!.
a friend posted the anthony morris videos on facebook today, and the ensuing conversation got me wondering: why are the jws still going door-to-door in the developed world?.
it's clearly useless as an evangelizing tactic; the wt have recognized that for 20 years, with their "go where the people are" spiel, but they also insist that it's still necessary.. .

More broadly, the Witnesses have two major problems in the developed world right now: retention, and money. It seems like retention would be helped considerably if they had things like youth groups and social-service activities, which they could do with the same volunteer hours that currently go into preaching. And they'd get more money if they stopped encouraging members to work part-time so that they could waste their time pioneering!
Of course it would require a bit of a doctrinal change, but if the GB can pull of changes to cornerstones like 1914 or the FDS, surely they could swing something like this. So why haven't they? -

Watchtower's Billion Dollars of Property Cannot Be Sold until Outcome of Conti Appeal
by Dogpatch in30 minutes ago i just got off the phone with some important players in this case, and some things were relayed to me concerning a lot of details of the outcome of the last two days of court.
i am passing this on.
cynthia hampton, one of the main players in the candace conti case (and a close friend of 28 years), just informed me of a further, far more powerful move by the state of california against the watch tower bible and tract society of new york, inc.. by order of the superior court of the state of california - county of alameda (see documents below), until the watch tower's appeal, which won't begin until august 13th and will take up to two years to settle due to due process of law, has forbidden the watch tower to sell any more of its $1 billion in assets in the borough of brooklyn until the appeals case is finished, to assure they won't shelter their monies in the light of this most huge and devastating sexual abuse scandal ever to hit the watch tower society, and perhaps any other single-victim lawsuit.

Read that yesterday, it's quite interesting. IANAL, but the Watchtower's position seems to boil down to three arguments:
1. They claim that the 1989 letter is insufficient evidence to prove that there was an organization-wide policy of secrecy around child abuse. I think they're going to have a hard time with this one; while you can argue whether it was right or wrong, the organizational policy was pretty clear.
2. They claim that the trial was prejudiced by various decisions of the judge that they objected to. At this point, that is just a formality, since the claim is going before the same judge who made the decisions in the first place. They're just mentioning it now so they can bring it up on appeal later.
3. The weirdest claim is that punitive damages are disallowed because the plaintiffs are trying to change Watchtower's national policy. They cite case law that states may not impose punitive damanges based on actions committed in other states. But the plaintiff's intentions are irrelevant to whether they have a legal claim; and the punitive damage award was purely based on how the national policies took effect in California.

More legal trouble for the WT? jw.org
by blond-moment inhttp://www.scribd.com/doc/99911315/lorterdan-properties-at-ramapo-i-llc-vs-watchtower-bible-and-tract-society-of-new-york-inc-case-11-cv-3656-cs.
anyone speak legal-ese?
sounds to me, (not fluent in legal-ese mind you or real estate-ese) like they are being sued for a bad real estate deal.

Watchtower won part of the case, and part of it was left open for trial by jury.
Basically, Loterdan made two major claims:
1. That Watchtower was cheating Loterdan out of their consulting fee by not pursuing the zoning change. The judge ruled that Loterdan was wrong; Watchtower was under no obligation to pursue the zoning change.
2. That by moving ahead with multiple years of tax exemption applications, Watchtower demonstrated a determination to develop the property, which meant they could no longer force Loterdan to buy it back. The judge ruled that this is ambiguous, and needs to be decided by a jury.

Capitulation: When?
by metatron init is commonly a human tendency to see your enemies/opponents as somehow bestial, subhuman, stupid and the like.
so, i hesitate to simply 'write off' the governing body as utter fools, senile, drunk, arrogant beyond logic, or lost in 2012 as the representatives of a 19th century religion.. nonetheless, it's simply hard to believe that they can fail to notice the intensifying confluence of negative trends and decline that surrounds them.

Honestly, I don't care what happens to the business of the Watchtower. The capitulation I want to see is that they stop exercising such deep control over their members' lives.
In particular: stop shunning family, and stop discouraging higher education. Obviously there are more acute problems (pedophilia, blood, etc.) but those two affect practically every Witness family in the developed world. If those changed, then the dubs wouldn't be significantly worse (for most families) than any of the other wacky offshoots of Christianity that fill the US.

I love how they start with "Use an Approach That Works" and finish with the same old brain-dead presentations. How about using an approach to evangelizing that isn't based on 1930's door-to-door sales?

Only 7? Wow, I think this is the smallest I've known the GB to be in my lifetime.
Also interesting that there's been practically a complete turnover of the GB in the past decade. Losch is the senior member, and he's only been on since '94.
Any word on who's actually running the show these days?
