I was interested to note that there is also a Jehovah's Witness meetup. I guess, it is not surprising that only 20 have signed up as opposed to the 2,612 for ex-JWs. I mean, why would you need a meetup to meet Jehovah's Witnesses in your area? Except I was under the impression that 1) social gatherings have been more and more discouraged by the powers that be and 2) internet use for anything has been definitely discouraged. Anyhow, thought it was funny.

Man and other animals
by Satanus inhere are some comments from the guardian mag on this subject:.
studies on pigs' social behaviour at purdue university in the us, for example, have found that they crave affection and are easily depressed if isolated or denied playtime with each other.
the lack of mental and physical stimuli can result in deterioration of health and increased incidence of diseases.

I believe it was Jane Goodall I heard point out--what distinguishes humans from other animals is the need to distinguish themselves from other animals. While it is true that humans do all those things, it is also at least possible that other animals couldn't give a fat human's ass for all that nonsense.

Some People Enjoy Being Jehovah's Witnesses For Various Reasons
by minimus insome individuals truly enjoy being jehovah's witnesses.
i think about those that would have liked to be in acting.
well, having a part in a demonstration in the service meeting or giving a talk in the theocratic ministry school gives one the opportunity to act, be melodramatic, show a little comedic talent, etc.

I also think it has a lot to do with personality. Some people just feel so responsible for the world and I think they must be much more likely to see a religion such as JW as a way to make that manageable. I don't feel any responsibility for the world at all--I just want to understand it. So if it doesn't make sense to me, I just keep moving. But I don't need to think I'm smarter or better than people who are trying to fulfill what they sees as their responsibilities, even if it makes me sad that they believe things and spend their lives in ways that I find useless. That's what I believe--but I find it very hard to keep my mouth shut and let them have their choices!

Thanks. I've been working hard at understanding all this, and it helps to know I've got part of it right!

I think in many ways it must be like being in the military. As long as you understand and follow "the book" and can either accept or ignore the inconsistencies and stupidities, you have a well-ordered, predictable and stable life. If you look about you and see people living chaotic and/or sordid lives, and you fear that without the discipline that JWs (or military) gives you you would be a mess, then I think it would take a major upheaval--or even several of them--to consider letting go.

Ah, it seems like yesterday. When I was 39 my sister gave me a refrigerator magnet that said "40 isn't old if you are a tree." I somewhat stiffly reminded her I wasn't 40 which amused her (she was 44 at the time) greatly. On the 20th, I will be 57 and 39 seems impossibly young! So happy birthday and remember that you will never again be as young as you are today! Enjoy!

I'm Cursed
by ashitaka infor years, my wife and i have had bad luck.
we were abused and were part of a destructive cult that almost succeeded in driving us to successfully commit suicide, we had to elope to get married, she cried for a year because of how rotten her parents were to her, she almost died a year later from an athsma attack, we got screwed to the tune of $6,000 on medical bills, our cars continually break down, my job is screwing me out of 15,000 a year just because they can, my wife got into a major car accident that has left her in continual pain, i myself have knee, hip, back and foot problems, we may not win the civil case to get some exta funds for her injuries, which will leave us even more profoundly in debt (possibly $6,000), her parents essentially disowned her, we had her deadbeat brother live with us for 3 years because we felt sorry for him, and we barely even got a thank you for our sacrifice, our car insurance is 6,330 a year (more bad luck), we can't afford to buy food, my wife and i are both near physical and mental breakdown, and this morning, my car's transmission broke after sitting in traffic on route 287 for three hours.. there's nothing left of me.
i must be cursed.

It is hard to conceive of a helpful response--so let me just say I'm sorry you continue to deal with so much hardship and I hope things will lighten up in the near future!
