It would be especially wonderful if the masks represented members of the GB--especially the much-beloved Ted.

I just listened to the Terrence Howard interview and he insists his family is Muslim, not JW. But he certainly revealed himself to be someone who would be open to JW-type fundamentalism.

Is the Watchtower beginning to lose its grip on its members?
by Gill ini have seen a counsellor on and off since leaving watchtower land.
she has made efforts to find out more about jehovah's witnesses.. we were discussing why my jw family (not my husbands' they shun us as if we smell bad!!!!
) are beginning to spend more time with us.

That's my limited experience--that JWs are encouraging their children to continue their educations and, where able, supporting them financially. There will probably always be Jehovah's Witnesses, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't dwindle to 50,000 or so in the US. There are always people who want to devote themselves to one thing or another and the more ritualistic and meaningless the requirements the better. But with the reported exodus of young JWs and the failure to recruit adults in any significant numbers, it doesn't seem likely that they can continue as is. However, I think we are in for some very hard times which, historically, has driven people to religions of all kind, so we shall we.

Are JWs chronic liars?
by Kristofer init's been about a year since i've been on this board.
and what brought me here was me (a non-jw) seeing a jw girl.
i've been out of this situation for a while now.

My experience is very limited so I wouldn't want anyone to think that I think all JWs are anything--but the one I know pretty well is amazingly nimble about never answering a question. Amber Rose describes a conversation with my JW acquaintance quite accurately!

Some incredible new publisher statistics and Graphs
by jwfacts ini have been doing some analysis on the declining growth rates of the watchtower society and they are very encouraging for all ex jws.
i will try to link to some of them below, but for the firefox users or anyone wanting to see the source table they can all be seen at http://jwfacts.com/index_files/statistics.htm.
number baptised compared to increases in publishers and number that have stopped publishing.

I'm embarrassed that I'm not as good at reading graphs as I should be, so I have some questions: So the first graph represents, the number of people baptised that year, the number of people who became publishers that year and the number of previously baptised who have stopped publishing. Is that right? I'm trying to figure out if I'm looking at current numbers or at ratios compared to some stable base. And, what the heck happened in 1999 that caused almost 50% of baptised members to stop publishing? One more question on this graph--does stopping publishing mean stopping turning in time sheets? Thanks, sorry for being dense--and thanks very much for the work!

Why do you believe what you believe?
by under_believer inmom, .

have you ever asked yourself why you believe what you believe?

This is the essential question that we should all reflect on--deeply and seriously--all our lives. Not just about religion. Another way of asking the question is "what do you accept as authority?" Every time I get upset about someone who is obviously being bone-headed I try to remind myself that I need to reflect on why I accept some other authority than the person I disagree with and unless I can defend my authority with something better than "my gut" I probably ought to sit down and shut up.

I heard an interview with her father last night on the BBC--apparently neither her mother nor her father are being allowed to spend any time with her. Her father said this was the decision of the psychiatrists. He, of course, was heartbroken.

Bill Clinton on CNN
by sammielee24 inbill clinton interview on cnn about global poverty issues.
i love some of the programs he talked about and showed during the interview - and i like the way he recognizes and puts some value on helping people up - i especially liked the program for the rural farmer where he gets 5 cows to start his farm up and after a specific amount of time, he in turn gives 5 of his now growing herd, on to the next guy to start his farm.
giving people a hand is not giving them a hand out.

Yes, and slaveowners were promised reimbursement for their slaves. But Lincoln was assassinated and the course of history was changed.
