i've just listened to an article on "the world" http://www.theworld.org/> "beijing's campaign of social control" .

.

as i listened, i was amazed at how much it sounded like the actions of the watchtower in all its incarnations.

Advice

i work at a college and just got as a new advisee a young jw woman.

she came to freshmen registration by herself which surprised me because in her application letter she said throughout her school years her mother impressed on her and her sibs how important education is and that they would be the first in the family to go to college and they would go to college.

also, she said that her father was self-employed in construction but that her mother was not employed (so free to accompany daughter to this very exciting day, no?

incidence of certain syndromes or diseases?

i have seen the study on an unusual percentage of schizophrenia cases coming to emergency rooms being jehovahs witnesses, but i wonder if there have been other studies on what diseases/syndromes jehovahs witnesses tend to have.

i'm noticing, for example, a lot of fibromyalgia and depression, but i wonder if anyone has actually studied if the incidence is actually higher among jws than in the general population.

JWs and 9/11

i couldn't find anything using search, so maybe somebody just needs to point me in the right direction.

but i don't remember any discussion about what jws thought was happening when planes started flying into buildings and the hysteria in the nation began to build.

i do know about the reaction of the watchtower, locking their doors against people in need.

charitable work

i was surprised to find that my jw friend had been on the board of directors of a charitable organization for a number of years because i've read here that any charitable activities are actively discouraged on the basis of either any time spent at any such activities would better be spent in "the preaching work" and that any attempt to solve problem sin "this system" is a waste of time and resources since jehovah will fix everything permanently in his own time.

can anyone point me to writings of wts saying that?

What did the Watchtower say following 9/11

there have been some references from time to time about how jws felt about 9/11 and how the watchtower responded, but i'm interested in what, if anything, the watchtower said specifically.

i don't have access to any of the publications, though.

can anybody enlighten me?
