a letter read to us last thursday advised us to stay at recommended hotels only.
we were told by the governing body that those who do not stay at recommend places are on a path to rebellion.
The reason that the WTS is telling people to stay at recommended hotels is because they are getting a kickback from the hotel. I bet they get a commission for each JW room that is rented. More rooms means more commission for the greedy Watchtower. They suck!
Can you prove this allegation? I have often wondered myself whether or not there was an ulterior motive at work here.

Thanks for the replies. There is no doubt that the WT has huge holdings. The question (for me at least) remains the same - where is all this money going? Who benefits from having it?
the following is an apology by one of the many international churches of christ (icoc) that have been guilty of control and manipulation, and who have repented before theire flock.

This is EXACTLY the type of letter I would like to see from the WTBTS, at least once.
Interesting about the external audit - where's the Watchtower's?
this was the second letter given to elders that turned out to be a "resignation" letter.
this was, as you will see, because they chose not to answer any of our questions.
the reason we are posting our letter, is because it is now obvious (by personal experiences) that ones who we thought were our friends are now choosing to shun us.
I understand why you sent the letters - deep down, there is always some hope or belief that you will in fact get a reply, that there are in fact answers to these issues, that someone cares. One would expect nothing less of Jehovah's organization. I wonder if picking a single issue would be more likely to gather a reply, since so many issues altogether make it a clear "apostate" letter :) I have a question and a request. Question - your issue with the blood policy seems to revolve around the "fraction" issue. Do you believe that Christians should "abstain from blood" as the Society has instructed? Personally, I do not feel that the Scriptures address the blood issue as applied to modern day medicine, and I agree with the reasoning put forth by AJWRB. Have you reviewed that information? Request - would it be possible to get copies of your UN documentation? I believe that many people are trying to seek this documentation, and the poor UN people must be working day and night to address all the inquiries. What's the next step for you two? Where do you go from here as Christians? I am asking this honestly, with no other intentions.

With all the high ranking people who have left the org., I still find it hard to believe that there is no explanation for how the WT uses its assets. Yes, the Bethel facilities are well equipped, almost luxurious (at least in the US), but that's a drop in the bucket.
Where does the money go? This is a key question for many people and in my opinion, the only thing standing in the way of a massive exodus from the WT.

So, my naive questions:
1) Since the WT is a non-profit organization, aren't they subject to some kind of regular reporting and/or auditing so that the government knows there is nothing funny going on? I spent a little time on the IRS website, and it is likely that the WTBTS is registered as a 501c (non-profit). These do have to file returns, EXCEPT for religious organizations/churches. Nice loophole.
OK, so I decide to form the church of GCC. Our beliefs are sincere and clearly held (an IRS stipulation), we bought land dirt cheap and pay no taxes on it, and after improving it using volunteer labor, we sell it for a huge profit. None of this is taxable? Now, suppose I decide to funnel out 2 or 3 million bucks for my own personal use, without anyone at my church knowing about it. No one knows about this?
I'm sure someone would have discovered a way into the WTBTS' financial inner sanctum by now if one existed, but I just had to ask.
What do other churches do? For example, the Catholic Church is rumored to have massive holdings. They don't get audited either?
2) Has anyone actually tried going to Brooklyn or writing and saying "Hi, I've been contributing to your work for years now, I'd like to examine your financial records and make sure my money is being put to good use". (OK, this one was a stretch).
i just got out of the hospital, and have some news on my heart condition.
i have apparently had hypertension for some time and it had caused a slight thickening of my heart.
it makes the heart stiff and causes it to work harder.

Your mom was at fault for not asking if she could bring other people. But, it sounds like you made the best of it.
A snappy comeback would have been, as you were leaving, to quietly tell the zealot "Since you're a religious person, I'm sure you would enjoy reading <scripture>, be sure to look it up when you get home".
<scripture> being the one where Jesus instructed his followers how to pray, with an example of not being like this guy.
(How pitiful am I, I can't even remember the basis scriptures at this point. Grr).

Yes, been there, done that. It was extremely uncomfortable, especially at first.
It was worth it, yes, probably saved our marriage. Learning how to deal with each other in a moderated forum also helps at home. Instead of blowing up and/or storming out the door, you learn to take a breath and say "You know, when you say/do XYZ, it makes me feel like..."
Sounds simple, but it's effective.
For general marital malaise, try reading "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus." Leave it on the nightstand, I bet he reads it when you're not looking :)
