Sometime last year when I accompanied my then-husband to a meeting, the speaker reminded the congregation of an old WT article stating they should not use the word "unbeliever" when talking to outsiders. His explanation was that people found the word offensive. He further explained that people outside the org usually considered themselves to be "believers" if they attended a church, etc. (Even though, of course, JWs are really the only TRUE believers!!) The tone of the message was very condescending. There is probably similar reasoning about the word "pagan."

Who was the author of Revelation?
by worldlygirl ini was watching a program on the history channel the other night and it was mentioned that the author of the book of revelation is not known.
it is thought to be "john" but they said it could have either been john the baptist, the apostle john, or maybe a completely different "john.
what is the org's view?

Why do most dubyas feel it is necessary to get a new dress...
by Agent Smith inor suit for the conventions and memorial?.
i have never understood this.
are they gonna hold a beauty pageant at the convention?

Because it's their Easter!! I had this conversation w/my ex one time. I told him that the Memorial was nothing more than the Easter tradition of "Babylon the Great" - complete with the new outfits! Same stuff, different name, supposedly makes it okay.

maybe we should ban the word 'freedom' seeing that nobody actually has any, and that its used to manipulate the way people think.
Agreed.

"True Christians" Avoid Diplomacy
by minimus inthe 1-8-04 awake has an article entitled: will diplomacy bring world peace?----here's what it says in part:"would you like to see an end to all wars?
surely there must be some diplomatic solution to national and international conflicts......should christians involve themselves in diplomacy?......hence, true christians avoid involvement in this world's conflicts and its attemtrs at diplomacy......bible prophecy and past experience clearly indicate that trusting in human diplomacy to bring peace can only lead to disappointment.
those who rest their hope for peace on jesus christ and support god's kingdom will see their desire for true peace realized.

Pleasing Jehovah or Pleasing the Congregation??
by worldlygirl ini was always annoyed with my ex for using the words "pleasing to jehovah" to describe certain actions.
in actuality, he an his family (and i suspect others as well) seemed to be much more concerned with pleasing other witnesses or members of their congregations.
as an outsider, it seemed to me that they were always looking for "loopholes" to get by with certain practices, as if they thought they could trick jehovah or that he wouldn't notice so long as they were not reproved or disfellowshipped.. my ex sister-in-law regularly spent the night with her boyfriend or he with her.

Another glaring example: My ex made sure he was reinstated before he left me. That way he could make sure Mommy and Daddy would help him out financially (since they would no longer be shunning him.) Never mind that he is doing something unscriptural, they will help him as long as he is "in good standing" in the cong.
