Disfellowshipping - The 10 year rule?

I don't think it's a rule, but...

My sister was baptized, fell away and got all tangled up in drugs and alcohol, had a couple of kids from different guys, basically just fell apart. She was out for at least fifteen years and when she went back they just treated her like she was a new study. They acknowledged that all her "partying" was years past (as she is married now) and decided not to disfellowship.

Again, I don't think that's standard but apparently it does happen.

Why is shunning NOT a violation of Nat'l and Int'l law?

i was looking at the universal declaration of human rights posted at un.org and also the description of what constitutes a violation of religious freedom at uslegal.com .. .

according to the declaration of human rights:.

article 18.. everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

The government can't force people to associate and talk to everyone...

This isn't about forcing anyone to like me, associate with me or even talk to me. It's about having a policy in place to punish me for changing my religious views.

The existence of that written policy, a policy the WT boldly professes, is in violation of law. If an individual chooses not to speak to me or associate with me, that's one thing. But to arrive at that decision to ostracize me because of a religious corporate policy...? A corporate policy that even threatens other individuals with the same treatment if they don't shun me...?

That's another matter.

I know I'm wasting my time trying to figure this out.

There is also freedom of association.

You can't really pass a law forcing people to associate with or even "like" other people.

True.

But by the admission of WT's own printed statements, they disfellowship people for adopting other beliefs as a matter of punishment and an attempt to coerce the individual into compliance.

That is the very definition of placing "arbitrary prohibitions on, restrictions of, or punishment for--" on someone for changing his/her belief system.

I was looking at The Universal Declaration of Human Rights posted at un.org and also the description of what constitutes a violation of religious freedom at uslegal.com .

According to the Declaration of Human rights:

Article 18.

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Article 19.

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

According to USLegal:

Pursuant to 22 USCS § 6402 (13), the term violations of religious freedom means “violations of the internationally recognized right to freedom of religion and religious belief and practice... including violations such as--

(A) arbitrary prohibitions on, restrictions of, or punishment for--

(i) assembling for peaceful religious activities such as worship, preaching, and prayer, including arbitrary registration requirements;

(ii) speaking freely about one's religious beliefs;

(iii) changing one's religious beliefs and affiliation;

(iv) possession and distribution of religious literature, including Bibles; or

(v) raising one's children in the religious teachings and practices of one's choice; or

I'm not going to post all the Watchtower quotes of how they disfellowship as a means of punishing people for disagreeing with WT doctrine or shunning as a means of coercion to bring a person back to the organization - we're all too familiar with them.

I just don't understand how they get away with it.

Just letting you know I passed the exam

hi, my apostate friends.. a couple of weeks ago i asked for some advice regarding studying methods.

then some of you asked me to let you know my score after i take the exam at mineralogy.. i scored 90%.

i'm pretty happy with it because the exams i take are not in my native language.. if i keep up with the good scores i might get a scholarship and then bye bye watchtower society.

What did Jesus really mean, when he said he had made his Father's name known?

i am preparing for my meeting this friday with miss k. we are reviewing the bible teach book, and she is looking forward to "showing me some things about the divine name.

When I meet with Miss K this Friday, what verses might she pull out with her cherry-picker, to prove to me that Jesus actually DID declare the name of God, and that we are supposed to call God by His personal name?

Not sure how many times the WT has added the name Jehovah to the NT scriptures, but Miss K could present one of those altered passages.

By WT's own suggestion, it is best to have several bible translations on hand for comparison. In their book, All Scripture Is Inspired of God and Beneficial, they explain how comparing various scripts help to weed out spurious content. By showing your JW guest how every other bible out there isolates the NWT into a corner regarding its use of the divine name in the NT scriptures you will force her into defending the governing body and IT'S translation decisions - which in the end is all they have to fall back on. It might help to have a Strong's concordance handy to show her how difficult it is to render the Greek word kurios as anything other than Lord.

hi to all my fellows "apostates" in all world... especially in e.u.a.

and uk.. as some of you already know, ex-jw in portugal created a leaflet especialy to send to jw in all the country (individualy or to congregations).

we must say that it was a sucess from the point of view of the impact originated.
