I always wanted to be able to get someone to donate money to me, ask to borrow some of it back to build a hall, and pay me interest on the loan. I always wondered why halls didn't just save the money they were sending to the society instead of donating money so they could borrow it back and pay interest. Talk about religion being a snare and a racket...

Show me the money (WT as Fannie Mae?)
by gcc2k ini posted this on the "remodeling the kh" thread and did not get the desired feedback.. when everyone is done picking on me over in the cbs/silentlambs thread, maybe you can turn your attention to the following questions.. .
1) if the society still charges interest on the loans to the congregations, how does the society justify this, since it is clearly unscriptural?
surely there has been a "questions from our readers" about this?

You CAN be DF'd for not doing what an elder tells you, if the elder is a control freak (like the PO at my old cong) and pushes it!
I don't think Bill was overstating. The vast majority of people who watched that segment don't understand why a JW would even care what an elder told them to do about such an issue. The degree of control elders have over the congregations is the main issue here...prove that they can keep wrongdoing under wraps and intimidate people and you will convince the general public how warped this religion is.

If the Catholic church has to pay retribution to victims, is the WT next?
by LyinEyes inat the beginning of dan rathers news report he mentioned the vast amount of retribution, not sure if that is the correct legal word, ( money paid to victims thru settlements etc), and it was a staggering amount.
there are so many who will finally have their day in court, literally.
so if the catholic church has to pay out for their coverups , doesnt it seem that soon the wt will also have to do the same?

What do you think about the Devil?
by Mandybp inwhat would be the best way of explaining to my 17 yr old witness son (who lives the other side of the world to me) about the devil?
i'm still a bit scared of it myself i must say, what are your thoughts on the devil?
do you think he exists or not?

I think the devil (whether he should exist as an actual entity, or merely as a concentration of the free-floating evil in the world) has this place in Brooklyn as his headquarters

Congratulations!
I am so glad you are going to pursue a college education, too!
My husband (also x-JW) worked nights taking reservations in a call center to get his college degree (that, and gobs of loans). Now he's going to go to grad school for basically free, because he got assistantships and awards that pay his tuition and a small salary (who-hoo). So, work hard and you can see your dreams come true!

The Best And Worst Accents In The World
by Englishman inwell, obviously we english don't qualify on that score as we simply do not have any accent whatsoever.. but i do like the mid to south us accent, it's very warm and hospitable.
i'm not too keen on the accent of the eastern europeans, it seems harsh and bombastic.
englishman.

I love listening to all accents! I have since I was a little girl, and I pick them up fairly easily, too.
When we drove semi (all 48 states and bits of Canada), we had a blast listening to accents. My favorite story is when we were staying at our company's Atlanta terminal (Atlanta may have a high percentage of nawtherners, but the truck terminals down there don't ). My husband had been asleep in the sleeper, and rolled out of bed to come in and go to the bathroom and take a shower in whatever clothes he grabbed first. If memory serves, it was an orange flowered shirt, purple "jam" shorts (this was a while back), knee-high socks, and his trucking company cap with his long ponytail sticking out the back.
He said "Hi, Sweetie" to me as he went past. The good ol' boy I'd been talking to (bit of a redneck but still the Southern gentleman) looked at me for a moment, and, with just a touch of understatement said, "Y'all ain't from 'round here, are ya?"

Fiddlesticks
That last post should have also said...My grandmother was a gifted botanist, who could make any plant grow (her century plant bloomed every year). Unfortunately, I didn't inherit that from her!
(wouldn't want to be dissin' grandma!)

My grandmother, grandfather and uncle all left school after 8th grade gradutation (common in that time and that area). My mother was the first person in her family to even attend high school. She ended up with a Master's degree. I've just recently been accepted into a very good Ph.D. program.
Am I more intelligent than my grandpa? Hardly. He could take apart any engine, and darn near any machine of any kind, figure out why it wasn't working right, fix it, and put it back together. Without a manual. I'd be hopeless with complete instructions. Grandpa was a 'custodian' (back when maintenance people were called that) for a small college. He could discuss mechanics with the PhD professors in the Physics and Chemistry department. They were good friends. He spoke an uneducated rural dialect, but he was one of the most gifted mechanical engineers I've ever known.
My uncle has educated himself to a very high level on World War II and Civil War history (my undergrad degree was in history...he read some of my college-level books on the subject and got at least as much as I did out of them). Am I more intellegent than he is? Hardly. By trade he is a small-business owner of a plumbing and appliance repair business.
Many members of my family were uneducated, but they were all intelligent. It was only the "educated fools" who could not look past the outward appearance to see the intellect.

Um...I'm not sure what sparked your post
Sorry. It was another thread that is now locked. Doesn't really matter *which* one, because I'm not trying to argue with others, just make a point.
