  Firearms And Shooting...

  i thought i would open up a thread on firearms and shooting.

  personally i was raised around firearms as my dad was not a jw.

  some of my earliest memories are of my dad teaching me how to put a round in a fleas ass at 200 meters.

  Im getting the itch to buy another. I've been looking at polymer frames and I cant seem to make up my mind as to wether to buy a full size or a compact. I've been giving the Springfield XD's a serious look though. If I go full size I was thinking about either the new XD45 or even perhaps one of the tatical series. But the size and weight of the sub-compact 3" seems real appealing.

  Hey, I've got an XD9SC I'll trade you for that Mark IV! Seriously. :)

  They make a good carry gun. I haven't shot the full size but I've heard people say there's not much difference in accuracy or shooting between full and sc.

  For many people XDs 'point' nicer than Glocks...more like a 1911, I believe. The guy who made my Sig holster said he really believed there were people that had "Glock" hands and people that had "XD" hands...that the grip angle of one would be natural, and they'd hate the other.

  I have a 15 round mag for my subbie...carry the 10 rd in the gun and a 15 in the belt, conceilable and backup rounds. I was not thrilled with the 10 round mags until I got the Pearce Grip Extension - makes a world of difference.

  Man, that double is REAL pretty!

  Especially for being 130 years old! And well used...my uncle told me my great uncle used modern 12 g ammo in it (I guess you're not supposed to do that but it worked!)

  BTW, how do you quote other people's posts? My right click seems to be disabled on this board.

  I don't right click, I just copy (L click) and past into the message, then highlight the quoted portion and hit the "quote" button (the one that looks like a little caption balloon by the smiley face button). Speaking of "well used"...here's the old Ruger Std .22 my grandpa left me...he taught me to shoot at the dump with it.

  I have my grandpa's 1955 Ruger Standard .22 pistol and his Remington 1100 12 gauge.

  The coolest gun I've ever handled that I don't own was my great-grandpa's 1875 Parker Bros double barrel. Grt-grandpa bought it used. Grandpa (b. 1904) hunted with it when he was a kid. That was awesome. It's still in the family.

  The gun that I most want that I don't have (and probably won't have for a long time if ever) is a 1911. They are sweeeeet.

  Last week I took an intermediate shooting class. The instructor had me change my grip slightly (tilt my left hand farther to the front and down and point my right thumb up more) to help with recoil and get back on target quicker, and start really working on trigger reset. This, of course, has affected my accuracy a bit for the worse but it's getting better as I practice.

  This is harder to do with my Springfield XD9 and my Sig P220 than it is with the range's rental 1911 (Springfield TRP and Kimber Custom II). The 1911s are so slim it's easy (especially the right thumb part)!

  I won't be able to afford a 1911 for ages though

  I will submit that the original issue in the thread is quite an interesting one. In fact, given the JW stand on government, war, law enforcement, and general individual rights - one could reasonably expect that they would have strictly forbidden gun ownership, target shooting, hunting & fishing, etc. in alignment with their "not part of this evil world" mentality. And yet they have not!

  Well, see, as the original poster, I thought they had banned gun ownership, at least handguns (that woulda been very helpful to tell gun owners forums in an effort to get them to write off JWs forever). This was the word we got. Of course, we studied with people who had been raised as JWs, with a JW mom who'd had a couple of abusive (non-JW) husbands during their childhood. Thinking back on it, these were people who would naturally take the most extreme interpretation of what the WT said about guns (can't be 'used' if you have a job where you carry = guns forbidden).

  As I said, in or congregation they were banned, and hubby was told he had to take the shotgun back to his dad's place before he could get baptised.

  My guess is that (in an utterly outstanding and surprising case of common sense, considering who we're talking about) the GB and other powers that be knew that it would be...counterproductive...for them to issue an ultimatum of this kind. Men, especially, in some areas would have just wholesale refused and either left or ignored the rule (good for them). Even ignoring the rule would have had bad effects, because once you start picking and choosing which of the WT rules you will follow, we know what happens afterward.

  Thousand Trails

  does anyone know anything about thousand trails?.

  i contacted them and arranged for a free weekend on saturday (through tuesday).

  we have to endure a 90 minute presentation, and i assume they are like a time share.

  Years ago I had a friend (former classmate) who went to work for them when they opened a resort in our area. She quit because they wanted her to flat-out lie to the people when she was doing presentations. As this was a small community, these were often people she knew and she got very upset about Thousand Trails wanting her to lie to them.

  Be very, very careful.

  Ask around on vacation or RV forums about them before you go.

  We've gotten similar offers from other time share places and have just decided it's easier to pay for a weekend away than "pay" by listening to high-pressure sales. We've been thru the high-pressure sell in religion and see how that worked out.

  Naw, what they REALLY need is more specific info on the pornography, just so everybody's clear:

  "For instance, brothers, 22 minutes and 43 seconds into "Hot Horny Publishers" the Pioneer _____. This would result in a judicial committee. Then, 17 minutes and 25 seconds into "Bethel Ballin'" the Bethelite _____ with another Bethelite. Viewing this is no cause for alarm and would only result in several 'counseling' sessions with an 'interested' elder."

  All I can say is they know an AWFUL LOT about pornography to be able to break it down into categories like that.

  Wonder how many pictures and videos they had to view to justify that??
