Refiners; After the YoYo/Sexy Teen thing, I think we are all a little skeptical about people sharing computers, sadly, even when it is true. I didn't say you were hiding the fact that there were two people using your PC though, as you weren't. The minute logical got suspicious you came out with it.

So, does your 'nutty companion' believe this stuff, or is he pulling our chains? Don't come the raw prawn with me now. What is it like living (or whatever) with him?

I've had a mad Austrailian flatmate before you see, although MY one didn't think he was a powerful wielder of Black Magiks, so I have an interest in this.

I'm more than happy to 'like you' Refiners (and explain the god-damn name). Sometimes you say thing I think are quite cool or funny, and you seem loyal to your friends. But you know I have reservations about your actions, as I have been quite forthright. My mail is open. If you want to take it private, then that's fine by me.

I like to think you'd probably be doing exactly what I'm doing if you thought what I thought. If I'm right to think that, then I am sure we will end up finding out we have a lot in common, and even though we will bang each others' heads together from time to time, we will like each other.

But, reservations or not, I'll try not to step on your balls mate. People have taken me the wrong way before, and it happens both ways round, know what I mean?

I actually think that if there are not enough natural inducements to learn the common language of a country, and you have to introduce linguistic requirements, then it is a clear indication EITHER that your society does not allow immigrants to intergrate properly, or that the imigrants are willfully isolating themselves from society for their own cultural reasons (say, religious).

If an immigrant knows he won't be accepted easily into the main-run of society due to his background, and that maybe he can do better just mixing with his 'own kind', he won't have to be fully proficient in the common language of the country.

If this happens IT IS THE COUNTRIES FAULT. Making a law to force the immigrant to learn the common language won't remove the factors that make him feel like he's better of mixing with his own kind. What has to happen is positive action to make the immigrant community feel part of their adopted country.

On the other hand, if an immigrant group is deliberately isolating themselves for cultural reasons, then I think it is THE IMMIGRANTS FAULT. It also means that, in addition to not speaking the language, children growing up in that environment will not be bought up the same way as their contemporaries in the larger surrounding culture, which can often mean they are sexually disadvantaged as well as linguistically disenfranchised. I think that is as bad as an immigrant community feeling so discriminated against they elect not to take part in their surrounding culture.

Essentially, making the immigrant feel it is to his advantage to learn the common language works, and will seldom require legislation or compulsion.

One also has to recognise that sometimes fluency won't happen... yes, maybe a 70 year-old illterate female peasant from Bangladesh COULD learn English fluently, but to impose the same expected standards of fluency upon her as a 25 year-old with a normal modern education is not reasonable.

george w bush and his right-wings friends are quietly pursuing their domestic agenda while the nations attention is focused on international terrorism.. bush's attacks on women's reproductive freedom continue.. examples;.

1. on his first day in the oval office,bush re-instated the global gag rule,which takes family planning funds from organizations that even mention the option of abortion to their patients,risking womens lives overseas.. 2. bush has promised to re-visit the food and drug administration's approval of ru-486.and anti-abortion forces in congress have already introduced a bill to limit it's availability.. 3. with the expected retirement of 3 supreme court justices ,including sandra day o'connor,who is often the critical swing vote on abortion rights issue,bush has made it clear that he will nominate the most adamant opponents of abortion and civil rights.. the bush administration is committed to strategies that limit life saving stem cell research,criminalize abortion providers,reduce the availability of birth control and deny funding of health reproduction education in the schools.. what better way to take on the christian coalition and ultra-right leaders and movements,than to use your voice to speak up now!!.

rhett; saying the same thing over and over does not add to the weight of your arguement, only the length of it.

You have failed to really respond to many of the issues raised by others.

You say 'No one dies this way' as a justification of why your opinion is right, without any attempt to validate the assumptions that that opinion is based upon - basically, that a fetus of this age is equivalent to a newly born human being.

You mention supposed 'solutions' that would not work (there are more abortions than places for adopted children), and that the anti-choice lobby have signally failed to provide.

What part of 'you're allowed to think what you think, and so are we' do you not understand?

well, i expect this place will explode today.. and, frankly, im only posting this to assist simon.. some people here, think that there should be a position that there are no rules.

and that anybody can post anything they want.

even if it hurts people.in fact, so far, this has been the case.. and some people think that ,because it has been a free for all so far, a precedent has been set, and thus, it cannot be changed.. at the other polar extreme there is the terror of being on a moderated board.

I actually think, based on experience here and other boards, that if we stop talking about 'IT' and just get on with things, we will be doing the best thing, as things will stabalise. Indeed, they already have, and will continue to do so if allowed to.

So, that's what I'm going to do.

how do I cover my tracks?

long story but a couple of months ago i broke up with my boyfriend.

i am giving him back his computer (i have my own)but used his pretty often.

my question is how do i clean it up so that he can not get to my email addresses, favorite sites, old email etc.

Okay, how good is he? If he's averagely good, then deletion is fine.

If he is very good and obsessive, then you need to shred files, not just delete them.

A deleted file is still there, it's just been removed from the 'index' so that the space it occupies can be used again.

Shreding a file actually re-writes the space the file occupies. You actually have to do this about seven times to be 100% safe, as it is possible, using very advanced equipment, to see the ghosts of data previously deleted.

If you feel like a lot of work I could tell you how to do all this, but there is a simple way; after deletion of everything (contents of C:Windows/Temp, C:Windows/Temporary Internet Files, C:Windows/Offline Webpages, C:Windows/Favorites, C:Windows/History, C:Windows/Cookies, plus whatever files your EMails are kept in (depends on what EMail reader you use) which you want to get rid of, click on 'My Computer', RIGHT click on your C: drive, and select 'Properties', then select 'Tools' and defragment your drive. Make sure you don;t have a screen saver running or any other programs running, as they will make the defragmenter re-start all the time. It takes quite a few hours, but is the simplest thing to do.

This moves evertything around your drive so it's all neatly filed, and will obliterate enough to make almost everything unreadable to someone other than a data recovery expert, but keeps the programs already on the PC.

Alternately, format C: the thing and lie about it!

I used to have this idealistic idea about friends, that if some one was a friend, then they had reached this kind of state of grace. It was just after I'd left the Borg...

... needless to say, I found there are all sorts of friends;

Work friends
School friends
Club/Pub friends
Online friends
'Hobby' friends
Abusive friends
Fairweather friends
Foulweather friends
Passing friends
Needy friends...

Whatever, there are as many types of friends as there are friends really, though you can break it down into groups if you have a mind to. Some are CRAP in certain areas. Some you have to bite your tounge when they start on their pet peeve. Some are lovely people, but a little slow. Some just make you wonder how you deserved how to have someone so nice in your life.

... and I found, that, almost without exception, in some way, a friend will let you down...

... inadvertantly, in a small way, or in a huge way you can't believe...

... the big differentiator, is whether you carry on being friends with someone after they hurt you. I've normally found that the best friendships are built on dissappointment, as you know each others limits, and the fact that you both value each others' presence in your lives to eat crow or grovel or swallow pride or say sorry or whatever. Foulweather friend rule. The ones you've worked through the bad times with.

When you add two friends together and they fall-out, oh, that's a sweetie... NOT! You have to decide whether to be impartial (almost always best), or take sides, or appear to be impartial whilst taking sides, or whether to lie and cheat so you can lock them in a room for a hour and get then to sort it out.

I'm sorry the shit here's been upsetting to you Mommy - you do sound like you've got a good outlook on life

Smuttiness aside, how do you get a wild cat like that? Do you let it out? Is it really tame, or a tame wild thing?

I'm fascinated; I often think that a really smart person will put genetic manipulation to use on the cat family. You could produce sterile cats with colouration like that of tigers, or lions or leopards and make MILLIONS, as only you could breed them, and people would pay through the nose for a minature Siberian Tiger.

Note, I think that this is possible, but am rather less sure of the ethics of it; I'm pretty sure it would also be possible to take pet cats and genetically tweak them so they stayed kitten-size as well as designing imitation big cat coats for them, but the fact people would love it doesn't make it right.

Mommy, you have GREAT genes... you basically haven't aged in twenty years! My Dad is 76 and can pass for 55, I have a bit of that too, but you have it in spades. Do you get carded still? Well... you might not get carded at the moment if that's your current 'profile'!
