People do not realize that war with ISIS is not a war against specific state entity or country, but against ideology. There is no way to defeat it, only decimate its ranks. There is nothing to gain with occupying Syria. These Islamist fighters will disburse to other Islamic countries from Libya to Nigeria to Afghanistan to Central Asia to Yemen and you have another war all over. People put too much high expectation on Russia and Putin that he will defeat ISIS, but after two months of bombing campaign, ISIS is still holding. USA and Western powers are in war with ISIS for longer. The only way to stop ISIS from spreading out it is to contain it, redraw borders, and gives Kurds a place where they can stop it from digging it in the mountains.

Very Sad ... Another Terrorist Attack here in the USA ... and not enough guns to defend us
by RubaDub inif only there were more people with guns perhaps some lives would have been saved.. it's a sad state of affairs here in the us when enough people aren't armed when there is an attack.. if someone simply had a gun or was wearing a suicide vest to take the perpetrators out, other lives could have been saved.. rub a dub .

freemindfade, you are correct on this. Unfortunately, Western Europeans are looking into USA through left-wing liberal opinion where they think that banning guns will suddenly make crime goes away and it will decrease violence. At the same time they will fail to see own problems like Breivik in Norway, Paris, etc. Even if the guns are banned, there are millions of guns in the country which will take decades to remove from the society. -

Noah's Ark
by Darkknight757 inso i'm reading the book "the atheist book of bible stories" and something just occurred to me.. noahs ark rested on the top of mount ararat.
how the hell did all the land animals, dinosaurs and other monsters get to ground level?
did noah and his family just push them off the mountain and hope for the best?

Over the 100 years, numerous scientific researches were done on Mt. Ararat without yielding any result of Noah ark. Russians, Germans, Americans, and did various digs and remote sensing techniques on this tiny glacier and there was not evidence of something huge. It is not hard mountain to climb, I know elderly man who did it at his retirement. It is accessible, and not something that cannot be accessed.
Flood story of OT is nothing more than a myth and a moral story for the age it was written.

I am not sure if this can be applicable for all countries as there is a difference between USA, Canada, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, when it comes to crime, gun control, and violence. In Czech Republic, crime spiked after the fall of communism which caused many people to obtain gun legally. Having registered, licensed gun and permit is very easy in that country. The laws got more liberal in past ten years, and crime is much lower than was in 1990-1995. While crimes edged up during the Great Recession and lay offs of police force, it did not changed the overall relationship between gun ownership and violence. Czech Republic had mass shooting in the past, and there were mass murderers during communist era when gun control was very high. So, to me the gun ownership is more or less culturally evolved topic like in USA where there is a huge attachment to the guns. -

Which Spiritual belief system or non belief system is right for you?
by Giordano inwe have done this before but we have a fair number of newbie's on this site and some are struggling with the question about other belief systems and non belief.
where are you now in your own mind?
here's a quiz http://www.selectsmart.com/nontheism/ that is pretty accurate, at least in my case as to where i am at this point in my life.

I have no idea what an Iconoclast is.
It was a religious reform movement in Greek Orthodox Church in 8th and 8th century dedicated to destroy religious representation of Deity. It was probably influenced by Islam and had profound influence on splitting Greek church from Roman Catholicism. In this movement, any religious images were strictly forbidden. I would say in your case, this mean a movement that is attempting to destroy any religious representation, belief, notion, or opinion, often under violent means as did Greeks in the 8th century.

What is the alternative to JW?
by Formerbrother ini mean this with all due respect, i would like to hear from genuine people who think jw have it wrong and then what is the truth?.
im not talking about silly little quibbles here and there.. is jehovah real?
the the bible is word?

Why do you need an alternative? Do you need alternative to make totalitarian group better like replacing Hitler with Goering and suddenly the National Socialism will get better? JW beliefs are fluid, it is one of the religious group out there that does not have defined theology. Whatever fits momentary explanation to WT and JW crowd is assumed to be Truth. It does not believe to the same principles I grew up and I have left 22 years ago. For example generation of 1914 that will never die to overlapping generation. WT is rotten to the core, and there is not much to salvage. Catholic church at leas run hospices and nursing homes, or taking care of developmentally challenged, while WT gives a crap about people who are sick, old, or mentally retarded.
If you believe in God who created everything around and this huge universe, do you really think that he will leave with humanity this poorly written book known as Bible? The book with laws that were already obsolete in late antiquity and caused the western World do follow Roman laws instead biblical? This book where scholars already 300 years go knew it was nonsense under confrontation with reality, science, and historical studies?

Is this the earliest WT reference to 1975?
by Splash ini thought that the 1975 thing started in the mid to late 60's, but it seems the seeds were sown two decades earlier.is this the earliest reference to it?.
18 how many today are awake to the fact that the lord christ jesus, by his resurrection of the faithful bride members that slept in death, is taking his "bride" unto his father's house and the marriage of the lamb has begun' .... they do not say, 'it is a long time yet to the wind-up, and, according to the present understanding of bible chronology, six thousand years of human history will end first in the coming seventies and till then it is a long stretch to serve the lord continuously and undividedly.'.
... they keep their eye and heart on jehovah's kingdom, and not on the time clock.

Actually, the year 1975 was proposed way back by Russell prior his death. If I find his book Studies in the Scriptures, somewhere there he mention the year as a last limit when people who somehow survived Armageddon will have a chance to repent or parish. WT pushed 1975 around 1968. My parents started to study around that time and my mom was baptized for this big hype. My non-JW relative was always smearing this to my JW aunt that she was preaching that 1975 year was IT, the big day. -

Diogenesister, Carpathian mountains are beautiful from Czech/Slovak borders (White Carpathians) to Polish/Ukraine/Slovak borders to Romania. Some deepest and best preserved woods in Europe, far from industrial city life. I was born in city, but I liked to escape for weekend into nature. We hiked sometimes up to 18-25 miles. The villagers were generally friendly, religious, and we can easily strike conversation, unlike in the city. We could pet sheep, goats, and pick raspberries along the way. My JW aunt tried once and was complaining that the forest trails were bad, and it was funny to see idiotic men in suit and tie walk through deep woods and mud.
Once we had elderette that refused to sit at farmer house by table because she considered the motifs demonic. It was hilarious. We were in this huge old farmhouse, and the old man had handcrafted table from 19th century. As in the mountains, the motifs were showing village life, sheep, wolves, etc, but this woman insisted that the wolves are satanic and refused to sit by the table or touch it.
Once I know JW family who went to field service into the mountains with their extremely spoiled city brats, and the kid was running around the cowshed until he felt into the septic tank/manure storage. They have to fish him out, what I heard he swallowed a bit, and they could not get the smell out of him for a while.

I did not like to do field service either. However, i liked to walk with one of the elder on weekends through mountains. In Carpathians there are small villages and scattered farms, so we used to take a bus and go to some random village and walk through woods, meadows, cow and sheep pastures, and between houses we talked about bible history, life, etc. While I never experienced anything threatening on the villages, I heard where witnessed were chased by farmer with pitchfork and walking canes. I never like doing city districts, and some industrial areas could be dangerous. We had elder who was beat up by gang of gypsies.
