Goodbye to the Board
by dedalus inim leaving the board, and am compelled to announce it.
but there are a few things i want to say first -- some recollections that (perhaps incongruously) seem germane to my leave-taking of jw.com.
1) my first post was also my first thread, written in the summer of 2000 (on h2o, actually).

Do JW couples really have better relationships?
by Latin assassin from Manhattan inare jw marriages any better than the ones 'in the world' as they put it?
when they walk from door to door or mingle after a meeting they appear to be models of ideal marriages.
do you have any experiences with married couples in the 'truth'?
-
zeena1998
I don't really think so. I have known many JW couples who had really bad marriages. They have been married for like 30 years and most of those years had been spent being unfaithful. Not that that's a JW thing...it's unfortunately all to common. BUT I find that the difference is that these people tend to stay together more out of fear of embarassment than anything else. Or maybe my view is just skewed because I know more "normal" couples who have good marriages than I know JW's who have good marriages.

yesterday's Drama
by sandy ini am a little afraid this post will be a dead giveaway to who i am.
i am afraid of lurkers.
anyhow i am dying to get it off my chest and get some advice.

Sandy,
First of all, like most of the other posters, good for you for being there for your niece. Your voice of reason I'm sure is like a breath of fresh air to her after all of the drama her mom seemingly offers her. Just keep being there for you and offering up your unconditional acceptance of her...that is by far the biggest gift of love you can give her.
I totally get what everyone is saying about cautioning her about getting too serious about this boy at her age. I know of someone (a JW) who got married young primarily because of the "raging hormones" thing; they were messing around (lots!) and were told that unless they were married, it was a sin. Ergo, an early marriage. I don't really know how they are doing today, but I do know that they went thru a really tough time of it for a while.
My thoughts are with you and your niece Sandy!

WTS Addresses Child Abuse - er, kind of...
by iiz2cool inmy wife, who is intent on re-activating herself as a dub since i da'd myself, went to the convention this past weekend.
she showed me this new publication entitled "learn from the great teacher", and placed great emphasis on these two pages i scanned and am posting.
it makes a poor show of telling children what to do when confronted by a child abuser.

Undisfellowshiped,
Thank you so much for the reply. Very informative and very very scary, and that's only after reading ONE of the links that you put it! I find it hard to fathom that such drivel exists. I cannot find the words to properly convey the absolute abhorance that I have for their doctrine and the effect it has on its members. SICK SICK AND MORE SICK!! I could go on and on about it but it would only be venting based on nothing but my gut reaction...
I'm curious to know if there is anything that a "wordly" person can do to help change all of this? Whatever it takes to protect the children...I'M IN!!!!!!!!
Again, thanks for the reply.

Now while I was nowhere near being born at this time, this may ring a bell with some of you out there!
REMEMBER 1957?
I know some of you are not old enough to remember BUT this email below Was put together in a great way.
ENJOY
Remember this?
The following were some comments made in the year 1957:
(1) "I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, its going to be impossible to buy a weeks groceries for $20.00."
(2) "Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long when $5,000 will only buy a used one."
(3) "If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."
(4) "Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"
(5) "If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.."
(6) "When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the
car in the garage,"
(7) "Kids today are impossible. Those ducktail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing
their hair as long as the girls,"
(8) "I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying damn in "Gone With The Wind",
it seems every new movie has either Hell or damn in it."
(9) "I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have
some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."
(10) "Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if
someday that they will be making more than the President."
(11) "I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."
(12) "It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."
(13) "It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."
(15) "I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."
(16) "Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing
the best people to Congress."
(17) "The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on."
(18) "There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel."
(19) "No one can afford to be sick any more, $35.00 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."Andie

I know that I'm waaaaayyyyyy late in this thread but have just read it and have some serious, serious problems with it (the pages not the replies). As I started into the article, my first gut reaction was "OMG!!! Why would anyone put a visual of lions and demons eating people in little kids' heads????" As a "wordly" girl, I used to have nightmares all the time about demons and devils chasing me and coming to get me so I can just imagine how a child reared in the borg would react to that!!! Dear mother of God, do these people not think about what they print will do to these kids??
Secondly, I took offense at the line where it said that Jehovah will undo the damage. UH???? OOOOOOOOOOOh really?? Talk about setting a child up for some MAJOR disappointment in his/her life when the "damage" is not undone! To me, that read like "Don't worry if that bad person did that to you...Jehovah will give you amnesia and it'll be like it never happened." Yeah right! As many members of this board can attest, it just don't work that way. The memory stays with you forever and it shapes who you become in the future. I was abused once as a child and let me tell you that I would give just about anything to NOT remember it!
Lastly, I have a question. It was mentioned in several posts about having to have 2 witnesses to the "event". I'm not sure that I understand that. Keep in mind that I'm reacting to all of this solely at a gut level so much of what I say may not be accurate but it would seem to me that if a child is abused by someone and there are 2 witnesses to it, well does not not constitute something even worse? I really need clarification on that one before the foam dripping from my mouth stains the carpet!
I agree with all of those who have said that the WTS is doing too little too late on the issue of child abuse. )The same can be said for my old alma matter, the Roman Catholics.)
Please forgive my ranting and raving here...I'm just astounded at what gets handed out to the children of the borg.

Just in case anyone was wondering...here it is!
"Theory On Hell"
The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term exam paper:
"Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat), or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with a proof."Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant thereof.
One student, however, wrote the following: "First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So, we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member
of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since, there are more than one of these religions, and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all people and all souls go to Hell.
With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of
the volume in Hell, because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand as souls are added.
This gives two possibilities:
If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
Of course, if Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
So which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Krissy Jones during my Freshman year that "it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you" and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in having sexual relations with her, then (2) cannot be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic.
This student got the only A. -
