Weird crazy rules imposed by your local Elders.

we all know the sort of thing..... in many congregations, specific "rules" creep in...introduced by the local elders that become set in stone.. years ago, i heard of a congregation that sat down during the first song of the evening but stood for all others (the co changed that very soon after).

then there were the older accounts of congs that had rules to make the public speakers wear only white shirts.... in one cong now, i heard that brothers can only be used for sound or microphones if they do a minimum of 5 hours per month in the ministry!.

another cong has ruled that all appointed men must pioneer for at least one month each year in order to remain qualified.. .

This rule thing used to burn me up. Some time ago when I was an MS, I was given by the PO a form to use when serving as chairman for the Public Meeting and Watchtower Study. I was told in a very stern tone "use it." I looked at it and could tell it was not produced by the org - just something somebody in the field produced. I refused to use it.

Funny about the cowboy boots (mentioned in a post above). The same PO mentioned in my first paragraph made a rule outlawing cowboy boots. Then a circuit overseer came along and wore them during parts at a district convention (he was actually the convention chairman - head of the convention). Soon after, the PO was wearing cowboy boots during parts.

Other rules: Never work alone in service (clearly contrary to org instructions). Do not sit in backrooms during meetings. Do not sit on back rows at KH. Do not call anyone "brother" or "sister" unless baptized (clearly contrary to KM question box). If take break in service of 15" or less, do not have to stop time.

i want to see all the quotes for myself, if possible.. i went to my university today, and i got some more books.. checkmate, wt!

i can now check every single quote, almost without regard to how obscure or rare the book is!.

Well, at least they're talking about that kind of stuff. I haven't heard JWs talk about anything like that for years. All I've heard the last few years is the soft, non-doctrinal, non-prophetic stuff. JWs around me seem to be the type who've almost never even heard of the King of the North and wouldn't know where to find the account in the Bible.

If a JW in my area were to start talking about stuff like that, the rest would yell "speculation" and shut him up.

Silence after stating my confusion about "144,000"

the other night, i was told about a question that a friend's bible study had asked them.

the bible study asked: "if jesus is perfect, why does he need the 144,000 to help him rule?

jhine: The whole business of the 144,00 being in Heaven and the Great Crowd being on Earth is not correct and based on the WT ,s wrong translation of the words to do with innner and outer court of the Temple . In fact the Great Crowd are in Heaven , so the whole idea of the majority of people living on Earth as they do now is false . I have a proper explanation somewhere about this and will try to find it if anyone is interested .

Judging from what I know now, I agree with you. This is at the top of my list of projects - to research this (I'm going to do it without reading any other material first so I won't be biased in any way). F Franz, I believe, lied, or at best, was deceptive about this. Main issue is use of the Greek word transliterated "naos".

I've wintessed what DATA-DOG is referring to. The org knows that it can longer play in the heavey doctrine arena; it will get clobbered. So it's starting to play the emotional game.

It used to be that when I was telling people about the virtues of JWs, I would explain how the churches appealed to emotion, but didn't teach people - that the people remained ignorant of the Bible. However, I would say that JWs were different. That is, they didn't appeal to emotion; they just taught the Bible in a classroom atmosphere. However, now I'm seeing JWs become what I used to speak against. Now they appeal to emotion and no longer really teach the deeper stuff; the people are ignorant.

I tried to reason with my mother after the convention, however, she was teary-eyed with emotion from it. The org is really playing the emotion and propaganda up. My mother's responses were so ridiculously illogical and devoid or reason and indicative of, at best, suppressed intelligence that I found it to be almost unbearable.

It is insane, DATA-DOG.

with the official letter from the gb to all bodies of elders, a stylized jw.org banner can now be appended to kingdom hall signage.. what an auspicious year this will turn out to be for the organization!!.

among other outcomes, the "link" with the old, baggage-ridden "watchtower bible & tract society" recedes into the background.

furthermore, now you don't pretend to need feet trudging door-to-door - your worker is done at the press of a few directed fingers.

I agree. It is really interesting to watch it all unfold. I believe we'll see more changes in the next year. I can't wait to see what the numbers say over the next few years - number baptized, number of publishers, number of congregations, Memorial attendance, etc.

Pixar the production company is jealous of Caleb and Sophia video's

so said the co last night.. apparently a jw was on a flight and just happend to sit next to some big wig from pixar and when the man from pixar heard that he was a jw the pixar man just gushed over what great work that the watchtower has done in producing the caleb video's.

he siad he only wished pixar could do such great work.

the co said we are able to do it because we have free labor and jehovah behind us.. my husband stayed home from the meeting but wanted to tie in by phone and that is what the co said in his talk.. the co also talked about all the changes that have happened in the last ten years and how if some of the friends did not like it they needed and to quote him "they just needed to get over it" these changes are going to happned period.

I'm not going to slam you. I like to keep up, too. I went to a part of the convention.

I'd love to know whether the Pixar incident really happened at all and if it did, how the conversation really went. JW stories like this one get exaggerated and embellished, that is, if the events described even happened at all. I'm not really up on Pixar stuff or the technology used, but I saw the Caleb video and was not impressed in the least with the animation. Why would Pixar be? To me, it seems that the technology is such that many could produce such work if they had the necessary tools (hardware? software?).

The CO also talked about all the changes that have happened in the last ten years and how if some of the friends did not like it they needed and to quote him "they just needed to get over it" these changes are going to happned period. Also some have been saying that some of the changes were to save money and that is not the case in the least.

The org and its reps always speak in such a manner when they have captive audiences who can't question or disagree with them. Why don't they ever have open forums (or "fora") that allow for questions and disagreement? That hotshot CO is a tough talker when he's up on that stage and knows nobody can challenge him. How would he and the org in general and the other hotshots fare if they were subjected to an honest questioning/challenging session with some of us on this site or if even they allowed JWs to openly express their thoughts, feelings, and doubts?

I respectfully disagree with those of you who say "more power to them". And the thread title is 50% right. It should be "JWs can't party and can't dance".

The problem is not what's going on, but who's doing it and their attitude and mindset. They're goody-goody and smug and self-righteous. They're like "look at us. We have the one and only true religion, but we're still hip and cool." But they're not even close to being hip and cool; they're corny and cheesy. They're just followers who can't think for themselves. They don't know how to have fun. This is a group of ignorant, naive nerds trying to give the impression they can be cool. I have seen another video of this event that shows more so how corny, nerdy, etc. they are.

I would say more power to them if I saw them riding wet bikes or mountain-biking or hiking or snow skiing or water skiing or taking classes and/or reading books to lift them out of their ignorant, naive, brainwashed state. I would even say more power to them for dancing and playing music if they weren't corny and goody-goody.

Haven't all of you seen somebody trying to be hip and cool when he isn't? It just doesn't work. Have you ever seen some privileged boy who grew up in the suburbs and whose mama brushed his teeth until he was 14 trying to rap as though he's been hardened by life. It just doesn't work. It's embarassing.
