Razziel - if there is a danger of the virus mutating and going airborne, then I understand that it should be snuffed out. However, I think the rest of the world should praise the U.S. for its contributions - not piss on it.

EBOLA -why should America take the lead in handling it?
by hamsterbait inmillions have died in africa from civil wars where the governments have squandered money on bombs guns and tanks, whilst allowing millions more to die of malaria, diarrhoea and other treatable diseases.
thousands more have died in nigeria from religious killing than ebola.. and now big bad america is the one they all turn to (in mainly muslim countries) to save them, just like kuwait did in 1991.

Spanking VS. Reasoning
by SpeedRacer ini am having a discussion at work with the jw's.
should you spank a child to make them understand or do you reason with them.
they both agree with spanking.

I was all for a good old butt-whooping, but after reading some of the excellent points made on this thread, I'm having second thoughts. Appognophos & jwfacts - you're both making me reconsider my feelings.
jwfacts: If your boss spanked you whenever you did not do as he said you would call the police. So why is it considered acceptable to hit a small defenseless child? (Funny how parents stop spanking their children once they get large enough to defend themselves and hit back.)
People are concerned about domestic violence, yet train that behavior into their children by showing that hitting someone is the way to get them to do what you want.
Wow, that's something to think about. I might be changing my mind about my approval of spanking.

hamsterbait - I agree
NAVYTOWN - I agree
AlphaMan - I agree
littleSocrates - Your comment seems reasonable and level-headed. I don't know what the danger to the rest of the world is.
tootired2care - I agree
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who is irritated by this. Others want to dump on the U.S. yet they want to get everthing they can from it.
U.S. leadership is wimpy. It's like the mother you see in Walmart who can't handle her children. She buys them everything and gives in to their every demand, yet can't control them and lets them walk all over her and totally disrespect her. Instead of getting tough she weakly pleads with them.
I'm not against the U.S.'s helping others, but I agree with the comments made above about the others' stopping all their $hit and putting forth effort to solve their own problems first. I think the U.S. should toughen up and say "you're not getting a thing from us until you stop this and start that". And the U.S. should also demand that other nations - Saudi Arabia, China, etc. contribute an amount of help equal to what the U.S. contributes.
I do feel exremely sorry for the innocent ones who need help, but the U.S. is like a ship. It can only "hold" so many people. If too many people board the ship, it will sink, and then it won't be available to help anybody. The U.S.'s land, resources, finances, etc. are finite, but it seems that many in the rest of the world think they are limitless. Many want the U.S.'s doors to open up to any and all who want to come in and receive free medical care and all kinds of other assistance. The U.S. is to solve all the world's problems... and then still get dumped on.

the flood, mammoths, elphants, and food.
by Crazyguy inmy question is since it looks as though mammoths were alive after the flood and we know elephants are then how much food was needed to feed just these four animals for the time they were on the ark.
also was the ark, 500 feet long, big enough to hold the amount of food needed for just these 4 animals.. .

My wife and I take in homeless cats. You would not believe the food and water we go through feeding about twenty or thirty cats (and also the medicine we go through treating them). I can't imagine the food and water it would have taken to feed all the animals Noah would have to have taken in order for us to have the variety we have today.
The story is just so difficult to believe. What about, for example, all the different varieties of fish that are so sensitive to different levels of salt in water, temperature of the water, etc. It's difficult sometimes to keep certain fish alive in aquariums even with all the knowledge we have available today, the water testing equipment, chemicals, etc. How could all the different varieties have survived a worldwide flood?
What about all the different types of venomous snakes, insects, lizards, frogs, birds, plants, etc.? What about the platypus, the electric eel, etc.? How would Noah have even known whether he had representatives of all the animals? How did he know what types even existed? He had obviously only experienced a small part of the earth. Did he have some kind of catalog of all the types of animals that existed? Are we to believe that he knew of every type of animal that existed in his day? We are still discovering new species today.
I want to believe the story because I want the Bible to be true, but it's very difficult for me to believe it.

If god is going to perform miracles like causing the animals to sleep and not eat/drink/poop/etc, then when not just skip the whole ark thing and just miraculously levitate Noah and family and the animals above the water in a state of deep sleep? Heck, why even have the flood in the first place? A worldwide flood is a very inefficient method of killing bad humans and it causes so much unnecessary damage. Why didn't he just snap his fingers and cause all bad humans to die? Then he could have spared all the innocent animals and there would have been no need for an ark.

How many of you followed the WTS direction on education years ago and have been screwed by it?
by Julia Orwell ini'm really interested in this question because i've heard for years that if you forgo further education and go pioneering, when you have a family down the track you will get a good job because jehovah will provide for you because you pioneered.
as long as i was a kool-aid drinker, even then, i thought, "how does pioneering pay your bills?
surely education should come first.

Count me in. I was screwed. I gave up educational, job, and business opportunities. Lived on almost nothing. Lived in a shack, an old bus, etc. while pioneering. Have zero retirement prospects. Will get very little social security because never made much money.
And, I too, scored at the top of many different classes during elementary school, high school, etc.

I think I'm going to wish I hadn't wasted so much time. Even if I thought JWs were right, I would still think I had wasted a lot of time for several reasons. For one thing, the ministry is so inefficient. There is so little actual quality preaching/teaching for all the hours spent. Also, there so little return on all the time spent on meetings.

David and Abishag
by opusdei1972 in1 king david was now very old, and no matter how many blankets covered him, he could not keep warm.2 so his advisers told him, let us find a young virgin to wait on you and look after you, my lord.
she will lie in your arms and keep you warm.
3 so they searched throughout the land of israel for a beautiful girl, and they found abishag from shunem and brought her to the king.4 the girl was very beautiful, and she looked after the king and took care of him.

My wife and I have questioned that for three decades. Just think.. a woman back then who wasn't beautiful wouldn't have stood a chance of getting that position - even if she had been a really good person. Looks really do matter - contrary to what the org says. Kind of funny how the org and others can quote some Bible passages and make it seem that it's all about the inner person, yet other passages in the Bible show that the outer person is important, too. As I mentioned in an older topic (http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/281209/1/Bibles-mention-of-physical-beauty-why#.VBY59aPD-ig), the Bible places great emphasis on physical beauty and physical ability, for example, explaining the exploits of David's mighty men, certain judges, Samson, etc.

Gustv Cintrn, I'm getting mixed signals from you (judging from your posts on this thread and others). Are you a believing JW? Are you a doubter? What's your position?
Believe you me, the average Hispanic JW couldn't care any less about 'NGO'/Investments/etc. stuff. They don't even understand the concepts, much less care.
We're just a gregarious bunch, really happy about the social interactions while trying to keep some sort of biblical morality; and the rest can just fall where it may and we wouldn't even notice, and if we did, didn't care.
Well, if that's the case, you folks might as well be Baptists or Catholics. Why are you JWs? Why don't you just gather socially and forget JWs? You can have a social life and be "moral" without being JWs?
First you say (in Post 74) "to the ordinary, intelligent JW this is nothing out of this world worthy of any scandal; nothing more than smart moves coming from our smart Org" as if JWs understand the situation and don't see anything wrong with it - in fact, thinking the org's moves are "smart". Then you say (in Post 76) "Believe you me, the average Hispanic JW couldn't care any less about 'NGO'/Investments/etc. stuff. They don't even understand the concepts" as if they don't know what the hell is going on. If they "don't even understand the concepts", then how can you defend the org by saying "To the ordinary, intelligent JW this is nothing out of this world worthy of any scandal; nothing more than smart moves coming from our smart Org." Your argments don't make sense.

What's "THE END" going to look like?
by Coded Logic inokay, so its no secret that many of us are hoping to see the downfall of the wtbts (or at least a mass exodous of jws away from them anyway).
i was wondering if you had any thoughts on what this might look like?.
we all know that most every jw has their doubts, large and small, but is afraid to speak due to the illusion of unanimity and self censorship .

I agree with keyser soze.
I think the next three or so years are going to be telling. It's going to be interesting to see what happens when the 100-year-anniversary hype dies off. I think we will see stagnation and then apathy and decline. The availabilty of knowledge has killed the prospects for recruting of the intelligent & well-read.
