Great OP and I agree.
Perhaps it's the prevalence of angst that explains why so many JW's suffer from anxiety-related ailments: depression, bipolarity, fibromyalgia, etc
EdenOne
Bipolarism and fibromyalgia are NOT anxiety-related illnesses.
there is no typical jw personality type.. any of us who were in the religion for a number of years will remember all sorts of individuals.
there is as much variety among jws as there is in the general population.
some were arrogant and judgemental but others were humble and kindly.

I had to reread your OP this a.m., something is wrong with this picture. Yup. Just what is your point? Never mind, you're so obvious.
In your OP, you said: Angst will continue dominate the thinking of ex-JWs until they give up utopian fantasies.
Yet, this is the comment you make after my post, directly contradicting yourself.
Do exJWs exhibit over-exaggerated qualities of angst?
No but that wasn't my point.
JWs do.
i just saw a video on fb, posted by a jw, which shows a bunch of kids singing to some recorded orchestral backup.
it was recorded last saturday, or sunday.,.
it almost looks like the kind of sunday school sing-a-long that you'd find at a 'normal' church.
Have you seen the "Happy at Bethel" video? :D
.
what is your favorite music video?
after shes my cherry pie, i like foo fighters learn to fly
Wow, I've been listening to women artists on youtube, and LONG before Elvis and even Carl Perkins, we know there was Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry et al, but holy smoke!
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a rocker (gospel+blues=r&r) back in the 40s. Here's one of her vids (not sure of the date), and she can play that ax. (Other vids and a couple of documentaries about her on youtube.

i saw this on another jw forum, and thought it summed me (and likely you) up without using religion or jws.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaiprrzvnjg.

I have my two of my own, and they are always on the shelf of 'reading room' material if a visitor wishes to peruse them. *I kid you not* Oh, and a volume of Frost as well, for those more pastoral moments. : )
I have the paper back version of this,

"A new handbook for the perplexed."
i also heard the video was being discussed on howard stern today.

The term is now used -- quite incorrectly by people in general -- to mean advocating a bad cause or injuring a cause by endorsing it. Sadly, these egregious usages have become accepted. -- A DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN USAGE, Evans and Evans, page 133
I have to agree, CoCo, that is quite shocking. The term is "playing" the Devil's Advocate, is it not? The true meaning is quite obvious. xx t

initially no, but those who work with or go to school with the LBGT community may have to have uncomfortable discussions about this. They may not feel as passive towards witnesses as they once did. Because it isn't a watchtower quote about god not approving of homosexuality, its a cartoon that addresses gay marriage in a specific way.
By putting this in a cartoon, they have chosen a very offensive medium (kids cartoon) for delivering their doctrine, also one that is easily spread. I don't care what HQ thinks about it or most R&F, I like to think that those who would normally say they know witnesses and they never hurt anybody start to see witnesses as more overtly harmful going forward.
I've been reading most of the articles posted in news and blogs (certainly, all links I can find on this forum, and others). Most stories are repetitive, but the Comments sections show a sometimes visceral reaction. You, fmf, have already described how some folks (gay, some nongay Xtians) are reacting. Some are okay with it, others are horrified. Yes, the message of this video is waking up some 'worldly' people to the insidious evil that is JW.
i know i've started similar topics before but this time i'm serious.
my parents have been constantly pressuring me and after yesterday's watchtower study they asked me if i was going to be baptized this summer... and i said yes.
i probably should have thought about it more before making a final decision, but they're pretty much forcing me to do it anyway.
BW, I was in a similar position. At 14, my parents took me out of school (high school, not enough control for them!), and shortly after, I was dunked. I was completely isolated and at their mercy.
Do what you need to do, love your horses, draw strength from your relationship with them (they are real, living and breathing, and have true emotions). from the joy of riding, and they will sense how you feel. You only have 2 years to go, if you have to, get baptized, worry about it later. It sounds like they will shun you when you leave the religion, whether you are baptized or not. Much love to you. xx tal

Thank you for pointing out my egregious error. I had misread so many of the others' comments about retaining this attitude. How stupid of me. I'm so sorry. OOPS.

Happiness is a choice. Part of the deprogramming needs to be focused on how to change your outlook to positive.
Many people experience angst nowadays (in western culture). It has become a hallmark of the American landscape because of 9/11 and the way it has been handled. Negativity can be found anywhere if you look for it. It's better to see life in a positive light, and work towards changing the negative.
Do exJWs exhibit over-exaggerated qualities of angst? From reading this board, if that is a true barometer, I would say no more or less than the average person. It all depends on your locale and social set. If you live in Detroit, and are from a steelworker's family, well, you may be experiencing that feeling. And I can't blame you.
Read "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. It's all about the subject, and many-layered, which is why it's such a famous novel. Education is a wonderful thing.
We, as a group, are generally a positive bunch. This would make a good 'local needs' talk, though! LOL! :P
