  Was music better years ago than today?

  In my opinion, the biggest problem with current music (heck, even through most of the '90's) is that there is absolutely nothing FRESH about it.

  There are basically about 3 types of mainstream music anymore:

  1. Earnest guitar noise with bland lyrics droned by androgynously clad young white men, who feel the need to pontificate about absolutely nothing.

  2. R&B songs that are clones of every other R&B song in existence. The music has no discernable beat and almost no dicipherable lyrics except for the random bit of pleading for sex. This kind of music has been touted as sexual accompanionment, but is the perfect device to promote abstinance, as the parties involved fall into a coma.

  3. Young women who were born approximately 1998, who are our great spiritual leaders because they can tell us all that "Life's like this." I don't know what I'd do without Avril.

  What is your most hated "platitude"?

  mine is the old "everything happens for a reason".

  when i lost my daughter, i heard this so many times, i seriously thought i was going to punch the next freakin' idiot who said it.

  it's just ridiculous.. i also hate the variation "god does everything for a reason".. happyout (whose teeth are still set on edge when she hears that)

  I've got a non-God related one:

  "Work at what you have to, then you might get to do what you want to."

  This type of thinking can ruin your life and just about ensures generational poverty.

  A director/producer bringing my works and others by my fave authors to the screen.

  An actress.

  Unfortunately, there are MANY things I could kick myself for, but I do have one huge regret in life:

  That I believed everyone (my father and stepmom mostly) that said that my dreams of being a sci-fi writer and artist were pipe-dreams and that I should face reality and get a job- any job would do- and not ask anyone for anything (esp. them).

  it has been mentioned on this board many times that the jehovahs' witnesses are a cult.. this connotation may not ring true with witnesses.

  i have mentioned to certain ones that.

  the witnesses fit the "definition" of a cult.

  As to the comment about there not being armed guards keeping people inside, etc:

  What about the fact that God ALWAYS knows what you're doing, where you're doing and who you're doing it with. Not only that, but he has a BIG BOOK that he keeps your record in and he has the perfect ENFORCER in His son who will come down with his two edged sword and KICK YOUR A$$.

  Whereas you MIGHT be 'saved' if you follow all the rules and regulations, you MIGHT NOT be because only God knows what's "in your heart" (like you don't.)

  AND- this is the BIGGIER- he KNOWS if what you're doing is motivated out of FEAR or if it's genuinely out of LOVE for him which he virtually guaranteed to be impossible with all of the afformentioned doctrine!!!

  SOUNDS LIKE A CATCH-22 TO ME!!!

  The Perils of Astrology

  yes, i am going through a crisis...well, for a long while now, i have been reading forecasts for my sun sign (virgo) and my rising sign (pisces, 26 degrees).

  i thought they were quite relevant to what i was going through, especially the pisces one...only to find out yesterday that during all that time, i should have read the aries forecast as my ascendant is at 26 degrees.

  needless to say, i do feel very silly about the whole thing.

  Hi everyone. I'd like to offer my opinion, if I might.

  I believe that astrology is a psychological tool.

  I also believe that it's sort of like a 'cosmic weather report'. It can give a person the general trends/vibrations of the Universe, but it's still up to the individual to decide whether to 'take an umbrella' or 'just stay home', as it were.

  Still, I never really felt like my Birth Sign... although, I was almost born a month earlier (the doc gave my mom a drug to stop the labor). Maybe that had something to do with it. I was a very big baby!

  Anyway, has anyone heard of Esoteric Astrology??? It's different than regular astrology. In Eso. Ast. the signs have different planetary rulers and it's more connected to the vibrations of the planets than the mythological significance attached to them of the regular/western/babylonian system.

  I'd love to talk about it if anyone's interested.

  Six of Nine... well, not to name any names (hee hee)...

  As a matter of fact yes. When I was 10 we moved to a congregation out in the stix and we found said situation. Of course we were welcomed with open arms, what with dad being a near apostate, high family dysfunction, suffering victim Sister for a mom, and the kiss of death two of us kids who had the misfortune of being *yikes* GIRLS in a closed and claustrophobic congregation.

  ANYWAY, we were befriended by the OTHER pariahs of the KH, who were with us in the car when the FS situation happened. It was fully as DISGUSTING as you can imagine! He was (is?) short, squat, balding with a huge belly.All of his clothes were doubleknit from the 70's (the fashion d'jour there) and he had a penchant for wide ties and thick plastic glasses. So alluring.
