You would think the attendance for the last memorial would be much higher.

just what am I supposed to believe now??
by purrpurr inwhile i'm glad i found this site, it has also crumbled to bits everything i've believed in my whole life.
i feel like the certainty, magic and wonder has gone out of my life.
this has left a huge hole in my soul.

Having other people do the thinking for us is easy. That's why we allowed it for so many years, and why organized religion will always be in style. Interestingly Jesus didn't preach much doctrine. He mostly talked about how to live in this world with other people. He said nothing definitive, that why all his followers are still arguing 2000 years later. keep seeking knowledge and truth. That's what life is about. that's why god gave us a brain. You are now free to use it once again.

Did the organization admit declining growth and stagnation in today's watchtower?
by kneehighmiah indid anyone catch this quote?
"over seven and a half million witnesses of jehovah really have found him and they truly love him.".
why are they no longer touting "nearly 8 million" witnesses?

Actually the growth rate has slowed. They should be over 10 million if they had the growth rate of the early 90s. Baptism numbers I've been receiving indicate a growth rate of under 2%. Nothing to brag about. Also remember they count unbaptized publishers, many of whom are kids who never get baptized and eventually leave.

They didn't mention that at my international a mere two weeks ago. Plus they have previously printed the nearly 8 million comment.

Why are they no longer touting "nearly 8 million" witnesses? I found this strange, but maybe it's nothing.

Scriptures that now seem to apply to JWs
by Magnum inin the last year or so, many bible passages that i used to strongly and confidently apply to non-jws, began to seem to apply to jws.
this change in my thinking was shocking and disturbing.
i can best describe the feeling by comparing it to the feeling i got in 1981 when i watched the movie dead and buried starring james farentino.. in that movie there are murders committed in a small town by dead people reanimated by a doctor doing experiments.

MAtgnew 23:15- Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves

Question for current and former elders: did you feel qualified to give counsel for depression?
by kneehighmiah indo you feel the counseling demands placed on elders are fair and scriptural?.
i live in an economically depressed industial city.
my dad is an elder in a lower income black congregation.

My dad has an engineering degree and an MBA but that doesn't prepare him to deal with mental illness. Ironically I have a relative who is a minister at his church who is getting his masters degree in counseling. Of course the wtbts would never want their elders to get degrees in counseling etc. they would tell them that the bible is enough.
Also TMS mentioned elders dealing with people who have addictions. Elders cannot handle this. They just tell people. "If you really wanted to stop, you would."

Do you feel the counseling demands placed on elders are fair and scriptural?
I live in an economically depressed industial city. My dad is an elder in a lower income black congregation. There is a high rate of mental illness in the area. He is retired now, but he spends a tremendous amount of time counseling depressed and unstable individuals. Many people do not have the money to seek professional help. Why does the organization expect untrained elders to do a job that is difficult even for professionals? It's unfair and is upsetting me. My father should be enjoying retirement, not running around dealing with everyone's problems. These people need Professional therapy. I believe a quarter of the women at my hall are mentally and emotionally unstable. many have low self esteem from growing up in broken homes, and the guilt and demands placed upon them exacerbate the situation. My dad holds a masters degree and is the only elder with a college education. I think it's ridiculous that these men are called upon to deal with those who have mental illness.
Your thoughts? Did you feel overwhelmed and unqualified?
