This is a follow-up to my previous post. I went to Google and typed in "jehovah's witnesses and psychosis." On the list of sites that appears, I scrolled down to the "watchtower.observer.org" heading "An eye on jehovah's witnesses"; you have to scroll down a little. They mention that in fact there have been numerous, large studies done on this issue. Ons study found the rate of psychosis among witnesses to be seventeen (17) times higher that the general population.

In regard to the issue of Jehovah's Witnesses and mental health, I recall reading on some site - I think it was on *this* very site - about a study done in Australia (it may have been conducted in New South Wales, Australia, but I am not sure) on schizophrenia among Jehovah's Witnesses. As I remember, the researcher in question used the approach of analysing admissions for schizophrenia to psychiatric wards in New South Wales. The study was quite rigorous and clinical. Basically, the results showed that Witnesses constitute a quite disproportionately higher percentage of these admissions than would be expected. In other words, in statisitcal terms, there was a deviation from the norm regarding the percentage of Jehovah's Witnesses in this group of admissions cases.
I also recall othe studies that showed that instances of schizophrenia, depression and other psychiatric ailments was statistically higher among the population of Jehovah's Witnesses than the population in general.
I'm sure that if you go to Google, or some other search engine, and type in "jehovah's witnesses and mental health (problems)," or "mental illness and jehovah's witnesses," or "jehovah's witnesses - a psychological profile," you will get a lot of websites for researching. Although I read it a long while ago and don't remember much, I know that the study done in Australia that I spoke of earlier is considered to be a very important one.

Regarding the prediction that China will be the world's richest power in ten years, I suppose that it's possible. Anything is possible, I suppose. I live a stone's throw (or should I say, a missle's course?) from China. I live on Taiwan (a.k.a. "Formosa"), and we who live here are concerned with every "twitch" of the big Asian dragon. China has been getting richer and richer due to the influx of foreign (especially Taiwanese) capital. But the Chinese have huge factors working against them. They are trying to graft a modern, capitalist economic system onto a political system which is hopelessly corrupt and useless. China is facing enormous problems with their infrastructure. One big problem is that it seems that one day soon, they will be unable to insure a steady supply of electrical power. Even now, their richest cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou are suffering power cuts. People are saying that their entire power supply system may one day "crash." When that happens, all those foreign firms will withdraw their factories. China is also having to deal with a huge gap in income and lifestyle between their urban population on the east coast, and the farming population in the interior. People in the cities can afford to buy cars, Rolex watches and designer clothes. People living in the interior have to scrape by on 50 U.S dollars - 50 U.S. dollars a year. Also, the Chinese banking system is one huge, fetid time bomb waiting to explode. China is on the verge of total chaos. The only thing holding it together is the Chinese Communist Party. The problem is that the Party has lost just about all of legitimacy and moral authority to govern. Just about the only card that the Chi Coms still have to play is the old nationalism card (read: "Let's 'liberate' Taiwan!). Meanwhile, the twenty million people on little Taiwan are going their own way. They are quickly developing a strong "Taiwanese consciousness." They are developing their own national identity. And their attitude toward China is: "Get f*****. Sooner or later, there will be war; it' s inevitable. With the outbreak of war, Japan will definitely get involved. And probably the two Koreas also. If China fails to annex Taiwan, China will definitely fragment socially and politically. Tibet and China's Muslim provinces in the far western region will definitely secede. After that, it's abybody's guess what will happen. I just hope that the Chinese will find a nice, safe place to store their nuclear missiles so that no one gets hurt.

Sirius Dogma - To tell you the truth, I myself don't know anything about Wilson Mizener, although I greatly appreciated his quote. I had never heard of Mizener until I read this quote in an article by Arthur Schlesinger entitled "The Opening of the American Mind" {which, of course, is an ironic allusion to Allan Bloom's book "The Closing of the American Mind"). This article of Schlesinger's is printed in a book entitled "The Fontana Postmodernism Reader," in a section dealing with religion in our postmodern age. If your interested in reading or ordering this book, the I.S.B.N. number is 0-00-686370-1 If your interested in this topic, then you might also want to read Armand Nicholi's "The Question of God," in which the author juxtaposes Freud's atheism with C.S. Lewis' Christian views. Although Freud and C.S. Lewis never actually met, what the author, Nicholi, does is to arrange a sort of imaginary "dialogue" between the two. This technique of contrasting two diametrically opposed viewpoints is an ancient one which goes back to the ancient Greek sophists.

To quote Wilson Mizener: "I respect faith, but doubt is what gets you an education." Since the time of the ancient Greeks, doubt has always served as a counterbalance to - a check upon - dogmatism and fanaticism. Just think, if only more Nazis had only doubted a little bit what they believed, then maybe some Jews would have been spared. This notion led Bronowski to proclaim at Auschwitz: "I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, know that you may be mistaken." When doubt is supressed or banished, that is when atrocities, such as the Holocaust and the pogroms, occur. Doubt is absolutely nescessary for tolerance and peaceful civilization to flourish, or even to exist. There absolutely must be doubt in both the political and religious spheres in order for a society or a civilization to enjoy calm. That is why religious fundamentalism is so dangerous in American society, or any other society. This is becasue both the religious realm and the political realm are areas of society where relative values should reign. By relative values, I mean a realization that various people have differing viewpoints. In my opinion, it is obvious in American society how religious fundamentalism has become a source of confusion in politics, precisely because religious fundamentalism and fanaticism both introduce their warped and intolerant absolutes into the realm of relative values. Religious fundamentalists everywhere are the enemies of democracy and civilization. A rational civilization can only be based on doubt - a hesitation in one's convictions that allows for tolerance and prevents a person from imposing his/her beliefs on others by means of violence.

What's everyone afraid of? Well, for starters, maybe they're afraid of losing family members - parents, children, spouses. Most people do, in fact, prefer to have some contact with their kin for the sake of love, emotional support and - in the case of youngsters - financial support as well. You make it sound as if getting disfellowshiped were like going to a dentist's appointment or having a much-needed haircut. Your attitude is so flippant and cavalier; it makes me think that you are so sort of troll. Many people find themselves absolutely incapable of stating - "It's been great" - after they leave, or are expelled from, the Watchtower cult. I cannot believe that you don't know of the horrific consequences that many people suffer when they are disfellowshiped or disassociate themselves. Many a marriage has been detroyed when a man or woman decided to leave the cult. Many a youth has wound up living with freinds or worse, living on the streets. And even if a person has no family in the cult, what invariably winds up happening is that they lose the friendship of people whom they have known and loved for five, ten, twenty or even more years. It is very easy to get pulled into the Jehovah's Witnesses organization. However, it is almost always extremely difficult to extricate onself out of this trap. Being a Jehovah's Witness is a way of life, a way of life in which a person soon finds him/herself engulfed in a quagmire. So, please don't state: "Hurry up and get it done." It's well nigh impossible to leave this cult without being inflicted with great pain and emotional torment. For some, it's too much. They kill themselves. This is because the "arseholes" who run this cult are able to exert a horribly strong and negative influence over people even, and especially, after they leave the sect.
