  What is spirit, exactly?

  i've always wondered that.

  recently i asked that question on another thread and didn't really get ananswer.

  cofty made an excellent point that we often hear what it isn't, but that really isn't useful.. so, what is it?

  The part you highlighted was sandwiched in between, which was showing the effects of the spirit or air we breathe which gives rise to what many would call 'our spirit' which can also be known as 'our way' ,our personality, our demeanour, our attitude as in he's got a good spirit. Spirit in those senses being used as descriptive In the context of the context of the conversation ,

  In that sense the word spirit is surely understandable.

  your point about other creatures ? I am talking in the context of human spirit.

  your point about force; there is no correlation between the force of a bullet or any other missiles impact and the force of the air we breathe.

  it only serves as a distraction of the context.

  Your point about the source of the oxygen ? Why would that have any relevance to the fact that we breathe it ?

  Your point about gravity? Humans do not breathe gravity , I would not make any argument that gravity was spirit.....would you?...would anyone?

  Hi viv;..I disagree with your conclusion re that my explanation is a metaphor for thinking.

  The first definition of the word spirit according to my dictionary is ; spirit noun, force giving life to a body.

  That force to my understanding as a noun is basically the air we breath(mostly oxygen) that force can be calm or violent ie we still have to breathe even in a very forceful hurricane.

  Force in terms of physics is seen as an influence which can produce a change or reaction to a physical system.

  Our bodies are physical systems, therefore the spirit is the force which gives rise to our bodies functions which in turn causes the influence on our brains (thinking processes ) which in turn controls our actions therefore making us the people we are.

  Spirit in human terms is imo not a metaphor for thinking, but rather the air we breath.

  Further dictionery definitions ŕe ghosts supernatural etc believed by many , Is to me delusional hogwash.

  for 2 years, soon after my daughter's baptism, i have been exchanging many emails with an elder of her congregation.

  good man, but he is a jw and he just drove me to the brink of madness recently; that was the drop the spill the water.

  Viv I think its all about context;eg, human spirit; motivation to accomplish, get up and go, vitality, willingness, attitudes ie positive and negative.

  All made possible by the fact that we exist and use our brains which can ONLY function by means of the air we breath or there is NO human spirit.

  Therefore our human spirit in all its guises is a combination of the brains formulation of our desires and goals for whatever purpose and the way we bring that to fruition.

  All made possible only by the air we breath.

  In the context of spirit beings there is nothing tangible , no motivation which can be tested or proved

  The idea of these type of spirits imo comes from the same stable as human spirit ie motivated by the same brain processes fuelled by oxygen, and therefore only exist in the minds of those who have a need for such, as a child has a fictitious but to them believable imagination.

  So to sum up; human spirit is apparent....supernatural spirit does not exist.

  An interesting encounter with some sisters today.

  when i got up to leave, i went over to their table and said "nice to see you", their faces were a picture.

  gemma obviously told them i was da'd.

  all i got were tight smiles, so i said to gemma "i like your hair like that" and left......

  Quelly , I enjoyed reading your post up to your last concluding remark.

  When you said " it felt good to be a good christian etc'", did you feel superior in the fact you now know how to be good and they don't?

  No disrespect but imo you are all victims of the same fundemental non...sense.

  Did you try and impart the good news of the kingdom to them as jesus is supposed to have instructed his TRUE GOOD followers to do?

  I'm sure thats what they think they are doing. ?...its all a dillusion, none of you are any better at being 'good' than the other.

  Hi kate;...Higher order abstractions Mmmmmm ? Idealogical guesswork, wishful thinking in a higher order way? Or...

  Concrete, evidence facts positive explanations, feasable conclusion .

  In which way would most people prefer things to be explained?

  Spirit is oxygen keeps the rose and us alive. When it's gone we're all gone ....end of spirit!
