  i was watching this bbc iplayer programme on heart and mind, (which is well worth a watch if you can access where you are).

  and despite how the programme starts out, it develops into a deep and touching discussion of what makes us human.. i personally was left with the feeling at odds with what i believed as a witness.

  Jgnat. Intuition:..instinctive KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge :...facts or experiences

  How do we gain KNOWLEDGE whether it be instinctive(primitive cautionary awareness of surroundings hazards or beneficial aid to survival) which is now built in to our wiring BRAIN! or phsych if you like.

  Yes intuition may well have developed first, but by what method: there had to be a sensory organ to process and allow that development.

  I 'm sure your not suggesting it was by supernatural means?

  I do not believe nurturing was solely developed in humans, I used it in respect of the human aspect of the point.

  Jgnat .I was responding to the question, as per topic. NOT about the modern multi/ faceted modern brain ,or about brain injury, but rather how we became human; heart vs mind. this must take us way back to our evolutionary development.

  Ballistic seemed to imply ;feeling first, thought/brain subsequently "bolted on". My point is simply, how can you have feeling without a sensory organ?.

  Gut feeling(intuition) has obviously got nothing to do with the physical 'gut' but that feeling is entirely controlled by the brain and by way of the nervous system to give that gut feeling, (primitive evolution to ensure best way of survival). Development of this process eventually led to our brains becoming cognitive.

  So I.M.O. what makes us human is the development of our brain(sensory organ) to have the capacity of reason/understanding/intellect.

  Heart vs mind?....mind/brain/sensors first wins. Emotions (heart) comes after in our development as humans as the importance of nurturing/caring became more essential for our wellbeing as a species. In my humble opinion of course.

  They (the writers) are basically on a runaway train which leads to a destination by way of ever changing crossing points because the destination never arrives .The train just keeps on rollin' along. Sometimes it slows , sometimes it gains momentum. Beware don't try and jump on 'cause its going nowhere!!

  i commented about how the 2008 yearbook gives the story of a girl who is on estonia idol and gives up an opportunity to progress to further rounds because she has a talk on the theocratic ministry school.

  when jws started to study with her, that is the day the music died.. .

  while watching the grammys, though most was trash the music from the 70s was great, i thought, what if paul mccartney's parents studied with jws and paul didn't become a musician.

  Atheism and Theism are only partly right!

  today we know that matter and energy are interchangeable, hence they are there always in either form, they are eternal, hence requires no creator.

  hence atheism is right in rejecting a creator, but failed in providing any motivation for people to do good.

  religions, in their effort to provide a motivating factor for humans to do good, introduced creation stories and other myths; hence they too are right (as far as their intention is concerned), yet failed in producing any worthy resultsworld was steadily moving from bad to worse and from worse to worst!.

  Hi abiather, where do you see the correlation between , atheism and motivation?. It definitely is found in theism as theism motivates(moves) people to do all sorts of practices.

  Atheism on the other hand is a non belief, we don't have to be governed by any form of direction, hence no motivation.

  i have been thinking about basic theology a lot and the more i think about it the more rediculous it sounds.. so adam and eve died from a small sin of eating a piece of fruit.

  if sin causes death why is satan not dead?

  why didnt adam and eve die that very day like god said?

  Enigma, when it all boils down to it, and you have to make a decision, do you think these accounts (no matter what spin you put on it).really have any basis of fact or that its all ancient myth and stories told for reasons which are totally irrelevant for our modern enlightened times.

  Life now for us all can be precious and fulfilling and hard enough dealing with the down sides without clouding our brains with non....sense!

  Jgnat...The process of deciding is cognitive act by the brain.

  Now which one is it?

  JGNAT it looks kike you and I concur .any feeling we have is immediately processed by the cognitive function of our brain.

  I stand to be corrected of course by science.

  No one was talking about brain damage thats quite a different matter.

  Hey phizzy, If you think we can make a decision before the brain processes it what is the process of deciding?.The sensory triggers sight, smell , touch even what we call instinct, ie reacting to an inbuilt feeling must be channelled through our sensory organ the brain. Our nervous system is directed immediately to the brain. Any other solution would be new to science!.

  Do you mean , that primitive creatures developed with feeling without a sensory organ ?. Although we speak of the heart as the 'seat of emotions' our emotions are entirely controlled by our sensory organ the brain. So what makes us human? ? Being that language vocabulary etc is relatively modern in terms of the time scale of our existence, we were well developed before any human like creature could even consider the question.

  Therefore as we became more and more 'human' which involved more intricate reasoning the only way would be through the development of the brain.

  Human therefore equals...Developed brain power which encompasses the emotions (heart) if you like. My humble opinion of course .
