One of the things that helped me wake up and begin questioning was this in part. I did not have any of the documents but as the financial crisis went on starting in 08, I could tell something was changing. Obviously I could not tell for sure because I was only exposed to my congregation and nothing else. After a few years went by I could tell, not having been a JW before, that things have began shifting almost in tune with the crisis. The pressure for more money and the constant reminders. One of the things that shocked me was the arrangement for donations where you could get a return. Apparently this is only good enough for tax planning and they never give you the details at the hall, you are supposed to call the "Office of planned donations" (or at least that is what it was called in spanish). Later on I realized that they won;t disclose the details because if you don't understand what it means, then chances are you don't have enough money to invest. The only thing they would explain is that you could make a donation and receive an annuity for the rest of your life. I could not understand how it was possible for you to donate money to a church and get something back. Doing some research later, I realized that chances are that you would never really "make money on it" but certainly would help you save on taxes. I just don't think your church should give you any kind of material benefit other than whatever you may need if you are poor. -

Name Things You Can't Do If You Are JW...or not supposed to do
by minimus inwitnesses are not supposed to stand for the national anthem but can stand for a flag salute.. you can't say bless you if someone sneezes, good luck!, or " you too" if someone says, happy holidays.. it is a religion of cannot dos.
everything is pagan and worldly.. what are things that are unacceptable to jehovah's witnesses that really are no big deal to everyone else?

Me and my wife do many things that are actually frowned upon. We just can't tell anyone or the judging will begin. Now do I care?? No I don't, but I know she does. You can't take this things in isolation. You can't discount the influence put on by the different constructs that you get from being there for decades.
One of the meetings this summer happened to be in one of the hottest Sundays of the year here in Texas. We 112 F in the shadow. I told my wife.. I am not going to wear my coat today, just shirt and tie. She said, why don't you just take it off right after we walk in? I said, because the heat outside is what I am trying to avoid, the inside of the KH is fine. She then asked.. Why don't you just take in your hand, put it on right before the door and take it off right after you sit down?
I rolled my eyes secretly and just put the coat on and left for the meeting.

I too understand it to mean literal sickness. I depart from the fact that If I am to believe in a superior, all loving, all knowing God who left behind scriptures for me to follow, with no other means of knowing he exists, then it must be easy to understand. I should not need a PHD in linguistics in order to understand what this God wants.
While one could say that the spiritual application is valid, is still referred to healing, not judging.
