DonutZ, another thing I read in the elders manual is that they can't have a judicial commitee hearing without telling your wife what it's about in the invitation.

Just thought you may like to know.

welcome and good luck! My husband and I are newly escaped, and I have to say that it is a huge blessing that we both woke up together. So far we haven't had to deal with the elders, so I don't have any advice there other than to listen to what those with experience are saying.

Afraid that is simply not true.

They have given enough formal notice there to go ahead and hold the meeting with the young lady absent. There, they will likely DF her. When they drop by to tell her she has been DFd, the only recourse is to appeal if formally or accept it. The WT Service Dept will support it and just tell her to appeal it and keep making progress towards reinstatement.

    Seen it too many times.

DesirousOfChange - the following is taken from page 83 of the book Shepherd the Flock of God (2010), under the heading "Inviting the Accused to the Judicial Hearing"...

I should just add what the ramifications of this are. Based on the above, a person who is invited to a hearing WITHOUT being told what it is about can quite legitimately get up and walk out once the nature of the meeting becomes clear. If the elders object, the one being interrogated can simply say "I really should have been told what my course of action was alleged to have been when I was invited to this meeting".

Are elders allowed to hack facebook profiles of members or what? Cuz that is some serious invasion of privacy.

Religious leaders take a lot of liberties that common folk don't feel comfortable taking. That doesn't mean that what he did isn't against the law, because it is, but religious groups have a very complex legal "shield" so to speak if you attempt to prosecute them. What you need to do is lay low and don't disturb the water. I don't know if you have seen the Fellowship of the Ring, but remember that scene right before the fellowship goes into the mines of Moria? The naive hobbits start throwing stones into the water playfully and they catch the attention of a rather fearsome water beast that chases them into the mines and closes them within it. So I will say it again, don't disturb the water unless you really have thought it out and understand the risks. Welcome to the forum, btw.

If I try to sue this elder what could happen if fail?

I wouldn't worry about that yet. I would start considering the full ramifications of taking legal action only if your elders press the issue once you tell them you are taking "legal advice" on their conduct. In an ideal world, the branch will tell them off for having done what they did, and tell them not to pursue the matter further unless your wrongdoing becomes public knowledge. In a worse case scenario, they will ignore your threats and keep harrassing you for a judicial hearing, at which point you could speak to a solicitor and get him or her to send a threatening letter to the Society on your behalf. If that doesn't work, that would be the time to consider your options - but there's a long journey before you reach that stage.

I don't know for sure, but this story seems odd. Elders hacking a facebook account? Asking for a meeting by means of a facebook post? Are you by any chance Johnny the Bethelite?
