YOU THINK LIKE A JW !!!

    Prisca,

You and I seem to be getting along - so please be assured this post is NOT aimed at you.

If I were to use the term "you think like a jw" to my Baptist neighbor, he wouldn't have a clue.

Say it to a jw or jw wannabe, they'd say "thank you."

Say it to an xjw -and it's "hey......."

I think lots of good things have been said, but that's never stopped me from commenting before.

The Black/White thinking is intense, and sometimes complete. You're wrong, I'm right - because God is right and I follow God. How do I know? Because the Society proved it from the Bible and their right. How do I know? Because they proved it to me so I'm right.

Our ability to "click off" is enormous. Evolution? Nope. Don't even need to discuss it - didn't happen. I know. How? The Society proved it to me - they quoted lots of scientists and they know. How do I know this? They told me so.

And this was brought out before - we're sooooo disdainful of other's viewpoints. "Poor ignorant people." Tsk, tsk. "We know because the Society has taught us from the Bible......everybody else is wrong.....we have The Truth."

We looked down on absolutely everybody else as religiously ignorant/blinded - otherwise, they'd come into the Truth, now wouldn't they?

I think it takes time to mellow - in and out of The Truth, and a lot of effort to allow others freedom of viewpoint. Like Larc said about human nature - we all have points we don't discuss well.

    Prisca,

That is good to hear, I had heard from someone that you didn't. I couldn't imagine anyone not liking Americans.
We are the cultural mutts of the earth. Everyone likes a mutt.

    Trevor,

Thanks for the complement. I am working on my written communication skills and this seems as good as any place to practice them.
The parallel thought of turning in your parents into the SS and turning them into the elders came to me as a kid. I had heard in school about the kids rating on their parents and then their parents being sent to the gas chamber to die. When I told my mom about what I had learned she said that it was a terrible thing to do and that the kids had been brainwashed by Hitler.

I guess some times you just can't see the forest through the trees.

    Hi Vienna,
You made some very good points:

    >Do you believe the Bereans were right to test the apostle Pauls teachings by Scripture?

The last assembly that I went to one of the speakers said, "You don't need to worry about this, the Watchtower does this for you".

    >Do you believe followers of God should obey the instruction in 1 Thel. 5:21 to test all things?
Do you you believe followers of God should obey the instruction in 2 Cor. 13:5 and test whether they are "in the faith"?

Of course, the same comment applied to this. What overwhelming arrogance this takes and I am sure it is straight out of the outline for the talk.

I understand how you feel about your faith, but until you are ready to take an honest, factual and biblical look at the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses versus Christianity, then discussions such as these go no where. Rex had mentioned some good points.

Jehovah's Witnesses versus Christianity? Yes, I guess that's a valid statement!

    Prisca,

a lot of good points have been made. Let me add my voice.

One sees it all the time, that JW thinking. It's quite simple: thinking has been surrendered to the Governing Body. There's the unwillingness to do original thinking where the GB has offered an opinion, like it is with the majority of JWs. They live in a state of suspended thinking in the religious sphere. And the problem is they don't know it. You can go on and on with one with this mindset and you'll never get anywhere. The thought of the GB speaking for God is too strong; it's the premise. How can Jehovah be wrong?
