I haven't done it with a beef roast, but have done it many times with a pork roast. It's a Polish recipe. Makes incredible gravy too. I'm not Polish, but I love their food. You can use really cheap beer too. I've used both and it's just as good with the cheap stuff.
You can make a really good stew with Guinness too. It's really amazing!!
