I'd say that to call oneself rich, you'd need $5+ million in the bank.

Several years ago in a large U.S. newspaper, I read an article on the business page that explored the question, "How much money does it take to be a millionaire?"

The author explained that to most Americans, the word "millionaire" denoted extreme wealth. The word was coined back in the 1920s or '30s when a million bucks was a lot of money. Adjusted for inflation, he said, it would now take about $11 million in assets to live the "millionaire" lifestyle most people refer to when they use the word.

And that was at least seven or eight years ago, so I imagine it's $12 or $13 million today.

1 million lottery winning is only $40,000 per year paid over 25 years. Not a bad salary, but not in the "wealthy" range either.

Kevan is "scheduled" for retirement in Oct 2009. For him to retire early would take a minimum of $100,000 per early retirement year. So for him to retire next year, we'd need a hit of $300,000 or more.

Right now 30K would get me away from my town job. $100k+ would set me up to do what I WANT to do for work...more than that would ruin me....

As soon as my business, or the investment of lottery winnings, or my next sugar daddy, brings me enough money to replace the income I was making 18 months ago, I will quit my job.

That was about $30K/year, plus medical insurance.
