    14001:

The death penalty has nothing to do with justice, and everything to do with politics. I doubt "the Terminator" spent much time thinking about Mr. Williams' alleged "redemption," or the plight of the survivors of those Mr. Williams was convicted of killing. The decision boiled down to fear of losing Republican support, inasmuch as he has already slid so far to the right that his reelection is in serious jeopardy in Democractic-controlled California. It was about "what are the political implications of this decision for me," instead of whether or not Mr. Williams actually deserved clemency.

And you KNOW this how ?

I suppose all the juries and judges, Appeals courts, State & US Supreme Courts...all of them out for innocent blood. All of them out to further their political interests, huh ?

    Damn. Good conspiracy fella !

Um, how does one 'kill to survive'?

Apparently, clarification of my post is in order. By "killing to survive," I did not refer to Stanley Williams, but there have been plenty who were executed in this country because they killed in the couirse of a robbery which was perpetrated for financial survival. While I consider all killing to be wrong, I find killers like the BTK killer who bound, tortured and killed many people for some sort of sick pleasure to be much more detestable than the criminal who kills during a robbery. Neither should ever see the light of day again, but those who killed for pleasure (e.g., BTK Killer, Richard Ramirez aka "Night Stalker") to me provide the best possible argument in favor of capital punishment. Nevertheless, I remain opposed to the death penalty even for these creeps. Two wrongs don't make a right, just more suffering.

Because I work within the justice system and also because I read.

No murder, no murderer, no execution matches the ugliness of the cheering crowd.

Law-abiding citizens, you are not cruel: you make death taste so sweet.

District attorneys are judged by success in the courtroom, and often engage in unethical conduct in an effort to obtain a guilty verdict regardless of the cost. If you're wealthy, you're more likely to be able to defend against this sort of thing as compared to destitute defendants.

BTW, where did I claim that the various entities you mention were "out for innocent blood?" No where. What a tactic, misrepresent the other person's comments, then attack your own misrepresentations. Pretty pathetic, but not surprising, given the views you've expressed.

Thank you for answering my question, 144001. While I do not agree with your position on the death penalty, your respectful answer was appreciated.

    Jean,

It's sad indeed that one has to be thanked for engaging in civilized debate. You owe me no thanks at all, and despite the fact that we do not agree on the death penalty, I still have respect for you.

Regardless of where anyone stands on the death penalty, Mr. Williams' case was a real tragedy, and nothing to laugh at. That is true for the victims this man was convicted of killing, their families, and Mr. Williams and his family as well. There are no winners, except for those in the public who take pleasure in executions.

Narkissos: You hit the nail right on the head.
