Look at the new members on this site just since the New Year. Yet many of us are still "counted" as publishers or those who attend meetings because of still being in a "fade".
While I do not think JWs will disappear and be "gone", they are losing their future potential when so many of the youths leave and they are losing the best & brightest in their ranks.

I think the answer depends on how close the friend was to you, what the gossip is, or if they suspect you left because of no longer believing and are afraid of hearing something that would be faith shaking.
For example, I frequently run into witnesses yet NEVER ONCE have I been asked why hubby or I left. Apparently, we were the subjects of much gossip and false speculation but I can only assume that they don't want to hear the facts from us. However, two VERY close friends of mine did ask me why. I told one that if I told her It would destroy her faith so she asked me to keep it to myself and I haven't heard back. (it's been a couple of years ago) I have s l o w l y shared my reasons with my other friend and she is on her own way out. :)
When I have contacted JW friends who left the religion before me, they have always asked WHY? My conclusion is that they have no fear of loosing their faith - they already have!

Sure would like to see those reasons. I never was a J-Dub so I don't know the tricks.
The up surge in JWD members is an indication of an awakening, no matter how small compared to their membership numbers. I believe that a good percentage of JWs (~10%?) might leave the organization over recent events. That would create a massive upsurge in newbies on this site.
JWs willingly knock on strangers' doors to talk about things they are ignorant of.
They willingly withhold life-saving medical treatments from their children, who often die as a result.
They willingly disregard literal mountains of evidence to believe that (A) no humans were on earth more than 6040 years ago, and that the entire globe was fully underwater for a whole year 4400 years ago.
They willingly shun parents, children, siblings, in-laws, cousins, best friends, because a group of men in New York City whom they've never met wrote that doing so pleases their invisible friend in the sky.
They willingly believe that all the problems in the world are a direct result of a talking snake convincing a naked lady to eat a piece of fruit.
I.e., these people are nitwits of the highest order.
After all that......What, exactly, would prompt this "mass awakening"?

It may not be a "mass awakening" but if only 10% leave it will be due to the money grabbing by the organization. That would lead them to start researching TTATT. We've already seen an upsurge of ex-JWs in and out of the organization here on this site.
