The Hebrews and Stoning

It seems from the Bible that stoning was common punishment at one time, although I use punishment in the loosest sense of the word.

If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife. Deuteronomy 22:23-24 NAB)

In this case, which is supposedly talking about rape, the victim due to her not screaming, possibly due to sheer terror or being at knife point, suffers with her attacker the penalty of being stoned to death.

Stoning no doubt was performed with some enthusiasm by a largish cross section of Jehovah loving citizens, keen to dispense holy justice. Are there records of public stonings and those who died? Is there detail somewhere of the “rules” of stoning? Were people pelted until an officiator pronounced them dead or did someone go in and finish them off with a weapon? Did victims live to tell the tale, and when did the practice fade out?

(Clam, who today is seriously interested in stoning but anticipates posters saying they have been stoned many times )

I always found it interesting that while there are many things in the Bible that seem to require stoning as a punishment that are very, very few accounts of someone actually being stoned. I wonder if it was simply not recorded or if in practice it was not very much enforced?

David and Bathsheba should have been stoned, and so should have Solomon after he "apostasized."

Historically speaking there was little unique in Hebrew cultural practice or belief.

Stoning was widespread throughout that part of the world and continues to be so today.

This is a modern stoning amphitheatre: And this woman is about to be stoned in Iran:

The following are culled from Blondies first link to Randy's site. The second link is to "Moslems Against Stoning" where some interesting quotes from the quoran are found. One that caught my eye was where Noah was threatened with stoning by unbelievers.

I culled the scrptual text from the quotes below to save board space but kept the text from Lamentations (a happy bible book) in as it mentions a pit which relates to the photo on the left above.

As unclebruce said that was hardly a specific Israelite practice. Stoning was quite common in Greece too, especially for the cases of sacrilege. In addition (if one dare say) to the capital punishment per se it is strongly symbolic of a collective cutting off: the whole community not only kills but expels the convict, nobody being allowed to touch him/her anymore.

For Talmudic comments on the practice, see http://www.sacred-texts.com/jud/t08/t0809.htm
