Forgot to add that I've also talked to different ministers who claim they requested a public discussion with jw's and jw elders always have declined any public discussions.
Who would have the "Upper Hand" an Elder or a leader of another Religion?

When I was a regular pioneer at 18, my Bble students told me at the last minute that they had invited their priest to their house and that within 15 minutes he was going to be there. They secretly arranged for him to talk to me and later I was told that had I said that I couldn't, they would've remained with their church. To make a long story short, it took less than an hour and the priest dejectedly left and the couple after listening to the debate said that they now clearly knew it was the "truth". Within 6 months the wife was baptized, within another year the husband was, all 4 children got baptized and in ensuing years a daughter married a Bethelite and went to Bethel and the son went to Bethel and became an elder...... Unfortunately, I was a very good debater/teacher and I got the best of the priest and the family to my chagrin is still very much in.

Being a biochem major and going for my Ph.D I've sometimes been invited to have 'debates' with creationist. I always decline these offers as no matter how good of an argument you put forth, their is nothing you can ever say to change their minds. They always walk away feeling like they've won the fight, as far as the audience is concerned, they are more than likely 99% creationist followers who only came to see another scientist get put down by their favorite creationist speaker. Its all a bunch of rubish I tells ya!

Unclebruce said: For example they see Satan in the garden of Eden when the bible only mentions a snake.
ALL SNAKES ARE SATAN IN DISGUISE.........yes they are, yes they are, yes they are!!!!
Well now that we've got that settled......
I guess it would depend on what topic the elder or priest/minister were discussing. If it were the trinity, then the elder might come out on top, because I believe there's more scriptures saying that Jesus is not God, as opposed to ones that insinuate he is.......I remember calling on our local Catholic Priest when I was 15 and we started talking about the Trinity. I was surprised that he didn't seem to know the bible very well, and it was only later that I found out that Catholics don't read the bible much---they read their Book of Catachism.........so i'd say I won that round.
What I would really like to see is an elder and a Professor of Religious Studies (with emphasis on Biblical History) go at it. The elder wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting the upper hand and would look like a total jackass trying to prove that Jerusalem fell in 607 BCE.

I have no doubts that an elder would run with is bible between his legs if confronted by any other cult/religion . Hell i did it years ago and i watched them turn all kinds of colors and run for their cars .
It doesn't take much,,,,lol

JWs always believe they win regardless of what is said in the debate. This is because the brains of JWs are incapable of processing a loss.

It would depend on which one is able to apply/expound it best whilst excercising their own reasoning skills in a sensible way (ie not arguing!).
There is a massive difference between 'knowing' the bible and actually understanding it - and some mainstream Christian leaders are *as bad as* if not *worse than* some JW elders.

i know for fact. that most so called christians. will get ucked into a trininty debate with a jw. once you take the jw out of their comfort zone. and start asking wt questions. 99% of jw's will melt. all it takes is a strong apostate. and one good bible christian. together and the jw will be whipped out in 5 minutes. it's all about control of the topics i can't count how many times i was reaming some jw at the train station .on wt shit and some christian lady came up. out of no where . and helped me bury these pioneer zombies into the concrete. it's like shooting fish in a barrell. me and a jw is no contest. add some christian bible toting passerbyer. it.s a field day with the jw's calling the police crying persecution. like taking candy from a baby. mini i like your posts. but i dought for a minute you could handle a good bible scholar. or apostate. using wt dogma. i don't see it happening. i would have you running chasing your tail . if you tried any of them wt verses on me. but then again i'm one of a kind.

I was introduced to the door to door work by a brother who could probably take on anybody in such a debate. The man was brilliant in his ability to think on his feet and ahead of the competition in a debate. And I don't say that just because he was my first teacher int that area.
I remember him getting into a debate on the trinity doctrine with a prominent local clergyman who held a D.D.. I can remember him sitting there with three of his fingers marking different scriptures for rebuttal as he'd correctly anticipated the man's argument. That was one frustrated preacher! That Witness is now an elder in Florida. He taught me alot about the door to door work and I honestly enjoyed it for most of the time I was a Dub, in part, due to his early instruction.
He was rare. And I would put my money on him in a heartbeat in that kind of a confrontation.

It really depends on who's debating who. While a newbie Christian, I was throughly schooled by my elder step dad. Two years later after much reading an research of the Bible I took it to him in a big way. He was totally frustrated.
Me personally, I would welcome the most learned dub in a debate any time.
