I'd like to see Armies (Sic) die out, to see "joining up" become not quite PC. Think about it. Without an army a dictator is just another nutter, hes powerless.
Without an army, a thug is just another lonley, petty person waiting to be taken advantage by some other person that wants power

Where would Hitler, Idi Amin (sic), Saddam Hussein, Franco, Mussolini, pol pot and Mugabe be without their armies.
Still dictators that would brainwash people. These were evil men. Since we're in a fantasy world, I wish we can get better government services with as much government efficiency as possible, I wish the Watchtower wouldn't lie and I wish Jesus actually did come down to earth to save us. We don't live in a dream world where everybody will magically drop their weapons, dance around a fire and sing "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke".

Let the politians(Sic) send their sons to war first. Somehow I don't think they'll have much of a stomach for it then.

Most politicians' children are over the age of 30, and most likley won't make it into the armed forces.

Yes I would fight and I would kill if I felt the honest need too, but what I wouldn't do is join the armed forces as I did that already. If an enemy was at my door or at my country then absolutely ! I would throw rocks at them if that's all I had, since I don't own a gun anymore. Afterall that's going in in the world today I think we should all go buy a gun just in case cause I think ol bushy boy just might send them to our doors.

Does anyone really think Bush cares about our security ? I sure as hell don't think he does.

Well, it's one of the few freedoms that you have left. Take advantage before it's too late. I personally am state licensed to carry a concealed weapon. Dont cross me or my family unlawfully because I wont hesitate to pump you full of lead. I'd rather me tried by 12 than carried by 6.

I would not volunteer to take up arms but if "drafted" I would do what is legally required. I would still attempt to avoid life taking by applying for non-combatant status, but with the advent of automatic potatoe peelers, not likely it would be granted. So if my government, no matter how much I may disagree with its policies, commands me to take a life in defence of the "system" (not rocks and dirt) I would do so. The option is to sew the seeds of chaos.

The way I see it, citizenship of a country carries certain responsibilities with it.

One of those reponsibilities is to take part in the defence of the country, should that it ever be required.

It goes without saying that to be engaged in armed conflict is to risk death or injury.

Sometimes, the most effective form of defence is to take the fight to the enemy, rather than wait for the enemy to come to you:

    - Uncle Bruce makes touches on this with his reference to the 1942 Kokoda Track campaign in Papua New Guinea. It is generally acknowledged that Allied Strategy in stemming the Japanese advance in the Owen Stanley Ranges of Papua was the correct one - and that the defensive "Brisbane Line" plan that was advocated by some would have only ended in disaster.

Most of us would desire peace.

Unfortunately, though, the lesson that history teaches is that peace can only be maintained by force of arms.(Unpalatable as that may be).

For example, unilateral disarmament after WWI only meant that when WWII broke out, the free world (if I may use that term) was caught woefully unprepared - and the price for that unpreparedness was paid for in blood (that of thousands of young men who need not have died).

The dictators Hitler and Mussolini got as far as they did only because the countries that should have opposed them

    1) Were unprepared for war.

    2) Either thought that Hitler and Mussolini represented no threat - or else could be somehow stopped by doing nothing!

Further to the matter of defence - it is much more effective if carried out in an organised manner. An organised force is infinitely more effective than individuals each singly confronting the enemy with a collection of makeshift weapons.

So going back to the question about fighting in the defence of the country:

    - It is a responsibility of being a citizen.

    - And as defence is most effective when carried out by an organised force, it is best done serving as a member of one of the Armed Services.

    My thoughts anyway,

    The Mayor of Turiwhate.
