    Wow, sounds exciting!

I'm heading out there this summer, in fact I'll be there in late August. We're setting out from Cairns and driving in a land cruiser all the way to Darwin. We're going to be fully equipped with sat phone, GPS navigation, GPS beacon, two spare tires, refrigerator on an auxiliary battery, and supplies for the journey. Would love to do apostofests along the way, if anyone is out there (we're going to wind down to Sydney at the end of the month-long trip).

    Hope you have fun!

It's a really long, long journey....I think it'll take a week and a half or so. I've been plotting out the route on Google Earth, let's see where the stops are....First, I'll be in Carins for several days, then the next night will be at Mount Surprise, then Georgetown, then Adels Grove, then Normanton, then Hells Gate, then Cape Crawford, then Borroloola, then either Katherine or Roper Bar, and then finally Darwin.

I personally am freaked about encountering all the spiders/snakes/crocs, hope I'll get to Darwin in one piece.

On edit: Here is the map of our journey:

Brilliant brainiac Leolaia is in Australia? wow .. my ignorance just decreased a notch

You guys will be fine August is still cool up there. Happy travelling, unc

ps: I am looking after a big guesthouse for the next six weeks while the owners drive to Melbourne, Adelaide, the Alice, then up through the Tamini Desert to Broome. David and Libby are in thier 60's. Libby is recovering from a stroke and David has just had his third heart bi-pass surgery - they figure they've cheated death already so they ain't afraida nuthun! lol. Their son Sam and his wife Loz (good mates of mine) run the outward bound school on the Drysdale river. If David and Libby can risk the wilds of the north - you folks will be fine (David wouldn't know a spanner from a spare tire but is the most positive bloke I've ever met).

Wow, guys! Very exciting. Hope you have a great trip up for the wedding, Es.

Leo, that sounds amazing. I'd be a bit nervous about the dangerous wildlife too...have you or the people you are going with ever been to that area before?

Hope all goes well for your friends, unc. They sound very adventurous.

It would be lovely to travel again. I'm so jealous!!

Furthest north I got was Port Douglas in the summer / autumn. I flew into Cairns from Melbourne via brissie and getting off that plane onto the tarmac was like walking into a sauna, the humidity really hits you. Being a hairy beastie it was hard keeping my clothes dry up there unless i was on the beach thanks to the heat and humidity.

Belows a crap pic, check out how wet my shirt and my forearm are

    Hi Es

I lived in Darwin for a year when i was 10. It is very laid back, shorts, tshirt and beer type of a place, Everyone used to wear thongs to school, before thongs where in.

Kathryn gorge is great, and we used to go swimming at some of the water holes.

You will suffer the heat. It is always about 32 degrees, but varies in humidity depending on the season. August is beautiful though.
