Even when I enjoyed going to the assemblies the whole family would always change prior to driving home.
I remember as soon as the session was over we'd rush to the hotel or home, depending on where the convention site was, and change to our comfort clothes and head back out to eat. Invariably we'd run into a slew of other JWs still in their dress clothes, some of them with badges, at the restaurants. Sometimes we got dirty looks from the older ones but the younger ones would look at us with envy. That was one bit of my life that they never infiltrated. I dressed nice for meeting/assemblies and service, but outside of that, I dressed how I wanted to dress. If someone didn't like it, tough.
Blondie, I'll get you an excerpt, but it'll have to wait until I get home tonight.
I remember!! There was a talk in our cong about the 'no fear' shirts to...there might of been one at the assembly to if I recall. When I met my husband at a local bar he was wearing a shirt that said 'no fear'
I was thinking he was really hot...but kinda afraid that he was 'bad' because of his 'no fear' shirt. Oh my word I was SO brainwashed
The Episcopal Church teaches that fear is the exact opposite of faith. And we heard a sermon yesterday, by a retired Episcopalian priest, where he read the scripture about knowing the truth and the truth setting you free. He then asked, rhetorically, what the truth sets us free from. Then he answered, "Truth sets us free from fear." He told of having open heart surgery, with the heart/lung machine in 1998. He said that he felt no fear of his heart being stopped, because the truth about God's grace and love, heaven and the resurrection had set him free of fear of death. Imagine that? Worshipping God without fear.
We had that "special needs" type talk about those shirts as well. We were also counselled against buying brand name clothing that had the brand prominiently displayed on it.

I don't remember the "no fear T" thing but it doesn't surprise me a bit. I can remember sooooooo many stupid other things that are very similar.

I was gone by the time the "No Fear" paraphenalia was popular... But I was kicked out of my house for not returning a shirt I bought with money I worked for... The shirt was made by "Vision Street Wear";
On the shirt it said: "Vision Street Wear", "Don't Die Wondering"... It was a nice shirt (button up front & collar) much more modest than most skate-tee's at the time with skulls & dragons (which I would have rather have worn)....
Guess the phrase: "Don't Die Wondering" implied that maybe I should think independently...
I wonder how well smurf shirts would go over...lol

5 Modest Dress and Grooming: Each of us can contribute to the overall impression given at the convention by avoiding styles of dress and grooming that are faddish, extreme, immodest, or overly casual. This applies when traveling to and from the convention city, while helping to prepare the convention site, and while attending the sessions. As servants of God, our first concern is for Jehovah's name and reputation, not our personal preferences or comfort. Family heads have the responsibility to make sure that their family's appearance reflects modesty and soundness of mind at all times.--1 Tim. 2:9.
6 It is no less important to maintain a dignified appearance during leisure time at hotels, stores, and restaurants. It is appropriate to wear our convention attire if we eat out after the sessions. Wearing our convention badge card creates opportunities for us to witness informally.--2 Cor. 6:3, 4.

Okay, so I guess it doesn't explicitly say that we need to wear our dress clothes on the way to the convention. However it is very vague and I think open to that interpretation, since it lists three times "this applies" all in a together like that, and then making that comment about comfort.
