Some are Native American such as Wisconsin and Illinois.
Some are from the old Brit days such as Maryland and Georgia.
Some are from the days when Mexico held sway such as California and New Mexico.
Others are named after US Presidents such as Washington.
Some are named after historic figures such as Pennsylvania (William Penn's father)

California, Arizona< raised here), New Mexico, ( I agree with DS Ruidoso N.M. is a gorgeous place) Texas, Texas ,Texas,<big state whole nuther country I love Texas. Oklahoma <born here, live here) Utah, Colorado< awesome place would love to live in Cortez), Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee <beautiful place lived there when I was teeny bopper in Gleason) Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky< Lots of hours spent at Kentucky lake while living in Tn.) Illinois, Indiana, South Dakota <from an air plane window) Minnesota <from an airplane and airport.) 15- I only counted Texas once and not counting S.Dakota or Minnesota.
Colorado in the summer time and Oklahoma in the winter time would be my picks for the US.
Unc. Bruce, England had New York first too.

I think I have been in all the contiguous 48 US states except Maine, NH, and Vermont.
My favorite is Washington or Oregon. I love the Olympia Pennisula in Washington. Though the Rain forest on that P gets 130 inches of rain annually, Port Angeles on the nothern coastline gets only 14. Alas, dreams!

I've been to all the U.S. states except Maine, Louisiana and Arkansas. I've been through parts of Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon Territory in Canada. No other countries, I'm sad to say.

Ballistic:
Doset isn't a State, it's "in a state". You need to re-read the thread title -

Three: Illinois (but only to fly into Chicago), Wisconsin (spent a couple of weeks working, mainly based in La Crosse, but also in some rural bits - went to find Garrison Keillor's cabin - and a few days in Madison) and Minnesota (just a drive through the western border - ?Red Wing).
Really liked La Crosse, and think I could have lived there, or Madison, perhaps. Still have friends in La Crosse, but haven't seen them for a few years.
