Mulan, glad your kids are all safe.

I had a fire once. I was 22 years old and renting a cute cottage by myself. It was arson the fire marshall said. Somebody had piled up wood on the side of the cottage and set it afire while I was away at work A goony young man who lived in an apt. complex next to my cottage said to me "One good thing about the fire, I finally get to meet you!" I reported his comment to the fire marshall.

Yeah a fire is tough. I lost all of my pictures of my then dead mother. (My brother had others so all was not lost) But I lost everything I owned. Previously a wicked step mother had already sold all my childhood possessions at a garage sale the summer she married my father. So now, all was gone for the second time.

For years afterwards you go to reach for a thing and have to think "Was that pre or post fire?" "Pre or post evil step mother?"

But, my experience is probably like most fire vicitms who only lost possessions------in no time I had many more possessions again. The pain of loss gradually subsides and is replaced by new stuff.

The same is not true with losing a loved one to a fire.

So, glad to hear their loss is only stuff Mulan.

Oh, I"m so sorry to hear this Mulan!!! What a shock and what a tragedy. But I'm so thankful that everyone escaped. The anguish of losing one or more loved ones to a fire is incomprehensible. I hope your son's family binds more closely together through this experience. Your daughter has great hearing.

BTW, our son's school had a fire over last weekend. It gutted over half the school, and he is now out of school until next Monday. We don't know if he'll be bussed to another school or not next week to finish out the school year. We also have yet to learn if it was arson, but that's what I'm suspecting (there's rumors that 3 14-year olds were taken into custody, don't know if that will pan out to be officially reported).

Anewme, wow. I appreciate your writing in with such great encouragement. You've overcome a lot of hard things in life, and you seem like such a graceful person for all of that. Your words carry a great deal more weight for that.

    Mulan,

It is sad to see all of their hard work burned down like that. Fortunately, they all got out safe. Things can be replaced people can't. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Hopefully, they will get a really large insurance settlement.

    Sincerely,

    Loruhamah

No, Princess is our daughter. This was our second son's home.

They were just here and the insurance company gave them a check for $5000 to immediately subsidize them, clothes, toiletries and other necesseties. They are going to go to a Residence Inn, paid for by the insurance, until they can find a rental for at least six months (also paid by the insurance company) while they rebuild. My son said they had bought the best homeowner's insurance they could get when they bought the house almost two years ago. It sounds like everything will be okay.

The pictures didn't get wet so they are relieved about that. The firemen took the downstairs toilet off the base right away, and all the water ran down the stairs and out the toilet drain. The roof was gone very fast so all the smoke went into the air.

The fireman threw their computer off the deck, but it was ruined and their new laser, scanner, printer is melted. All will be replaced though. They think their digital camera was in the kitchen so would be ruined also. The car and the truck were not damaged. All the clothes except the ones in the laundry room are gone, so they had things to wear today other than pajamas.

So sorry to hear this, Mulan, but very happy to hear everyone got out in time.

You know we'd be there to help, if we lived closer.
