All those things.. plus: Work on your speaking skills. Be especially harsh during your talks. I know that inviting the elders over for dinner helps.. bring their kids toys.. Show your leadership -- try getting the cong. kids together to do one of the dramas. Pick and choose what you volunteer for. Volunteer to help with the book counter but not to vacuum or such lowly things. You don't want to appear to be a slave but a good leader. Go out about 10 hours a week on the most popular times to be seen and then turn in 20 hours. Tell made up experiences about how you have been witnessing at work and make up a Bible study at work.

What worked for me:
1. Stay out of trouble, or at least trouble with possibility of getting found out.
2. Promise to get your hours to 10 a month, whether or not you actually do it.
3. Lead the group a few times and conduct a few times. Come early to meetings.
4. Have a grandfather with enormous pull on the BoE.
5. That's it! You are an MS now! -

Same as moving up in management in any company
1. Be very viable (attend meetings, active field service on days with elders, and make sure people know what you have done)
2. Be a yes man (Do not be known for say NO, be known for saying YES)
3. Do not be in trouble (Stay out of harms way and be willing to break of friendships that wont help you)

More hours than anybody. Volunteer for everything. Be a company man. If you can dob somebody in for something you'll get accellerated treatment.

First, find a congregation that is short on elders and MS but with a lot of work to do.
All the other suggestions are good. But the one that you can't manipulate, being the son, grandson, nephew of an elder or MS. The idea is that your "spirituality" is more likely to be better if you come from a "good" family. You can marry an elder's daughter or granddaughter (or even an CO/DO's daughter or grandaughter, even better).
Be personable, watch your hygiene, dress nice but not too nice and watch how your wife and children dress.
Another point, once you are appointed, it is almost impossible to dislodge an elder unless he commits a DFing offense and gets caught.

I was a MS within two years. The vote was taken for three decades for me to become an elder. [I was not an MS all that time but a lot of it]. I was never voted in. ON the last time for that, I was told by a cocky CO from Florida that he personally vetoed a unanimous vote in my favor, and he indicated that had happened in the past too.
The reason became apperent - He asked me what my opinion was of the most important quality for an elder? I told him it would be to imitate Jesus in love of people and especially the brothers and sisters. He answered that 'although that is a fine spirit - the key attitude would be unaminity with the elder body - there was no room for independent ideas and those who 'ran ahead' of the body.' What he was really saying was that I had opinions and ideas and that I needed to become a follower in all matters, especially never crossing the body of elders.
I never even sought that office after that. I was not interested in kissing asses. I really thought I would be able to help others in that capacity. Not many years after that we left the organization. I think that discussion, and an understanding that I was not allowed to think and love as an elder, was one of the epiphanies that eventually lead me out. Amen for that.
You want to be an elder here's the formula; lots of FS, kiss the PO's ass often, show zeal toward Brooklyn and it's policies, never question. In short - put on the puppet suit and let them pull the strings.

PIONEERING DON'T CROSS THE ELDER BODY
In most congs this is really about it...though Blondies answer of having an elder father, grandfather, etc doesnt hurt either. However your elder family member must be liked by the rest of the elders too

That's right, DB, because if he doesn't, the elders will.
